What you'll do

First, you'll get a brief history lesson and discussion of our business focus and markets. The remainder of the class is an extended wander around the farm for about three hours. I'll show you / talk about irrigation, fencing, growing areas, display gardens, bed preparation and soil health, equipment, flower storage, proper cutting techniques, our high tunnels, our rose propagation chamber, essential tools, post harvest supplies and many other things. Ask as many questions as you want - that's where a lot of learning comes from. We'll take a break midway for a sit in the shade, a cold beverage, and a discussion on the sales and marketing of cut flowers. You'll leave with your head and/or notebook filled with practical knowledge and considerations about growing, harvesting and selling cut flowers.

Learn more about Kaye

Kaye

My wife Kaye and I started growing flowers in 1992. I'm the grower and Kaye is the harvester/designer. We are the largest cut flower farm in Central Virginia. I'm self-taught - the school of hard knocks. I've done a lot of informal study, research and experimentation over the years. I love being outside in the dirt, heat, rain, bugs, etc. During this time, we've grown or attempted to grow pretty much every flower that will survive our climate and last in a vase. I've become pretty familiar with soil preparation and management, crop scheduling, growing habits of hundreds of plants, deer and pest control, irrigation methods, greenhouse / high tunnel growing, seeding and germination, rose propagation, support structures, and other miscellaneous stuff. Oh, and we also grow blueberries and figs, mainly for personal use.

What's included
