What you'll do

You will take a 30-minute boat trip from Lamu, through the channels of the Indian ocean, to Mtangawanda jetty on Pate Island. We will convene at the seafront and have a small brief on the island and what to expect. We will get onto a private vehicle to tour the island. We will start the tour with the beautiful historic village of 13th Century Siyu, followed by 7th Century Shanga, and the 13th Century Pate old town. We will walk through local Bajuni villages, a small minority ethnic community in Kenya, to see traditional practices. The expert guide being Bajun, you will be able to get a unique insight into the local culture. Traditional practices we will see include the making of “kofia” a traditional hat, leather works, weaving practices and other local experiences. You will be able to see local farms and sample some locally grown coconut fruits. In between tours you will be provided with traditional Bajun snacks.
