What you'll do

Waddle with me into the fascinating world of one Africa's most enigmatic—and endangered— bird species.

Over the course of our relaxed, fun and informative chat /drawing class you’ll discover little-known facts and amazing insights into the unique lifestyle of the African penguin via photos, graphics, video and a fun interactive quiz (will you be the Penguin Brain of the Day?)

While learning how to draw a swimming penguin, you’ll learn how to tell a "she" bird from a "he" bird, and how to determine their age. We’ll meet a supporting cast of coastal creatures—extras in the ongoing saga of these undeniably cute but highly threatened birds.

I provide a fun and educational experience that the entire family can enjoy. This can be added to your home-school schedule as a biology, conservation, and art class, or it can just be something fun to do as a family on the weekend. This is also great for corporate teams working remotely, private groups, birthdays and special events.

By participating in this experience, you’ll be directly contributing to the conservation of African penguins via our NGO work.

This is an online version of "Penguin Walk With A Conservationist", my top-rated in-person experience with 250+ 5-star reviews: https://www.airbnb.com/experiences/103116
Other things to note
This is a "Family Experience" so you might be booking into a group where 1 / more children are also participating. If you would prefer an experience without children or with only your group or own self attending, please select the "Private Booking" option.

Penguins and I go way back. A lifetime penguin conservationist, my career was inspired at the age of 9 when I encountered one of the first pairs of African penguins to ever nest on Boulders Beach. I wrote a story about them that got published, thus beginning my journey with penguins going on 37 years (and counting). I’m a widely published journalist, author, honorary ranger, shark-loving surfer and host of the popular airbnb offline experience 'Penguin Walk with A Conservationist' and co-host of the 'Penguin Paddle' and 'Kelp Forest Safari'.

The unfinished story of the endangered African penguin is currently being written and I invite you to be a part of it…

I booked this experience for my fiancé's 30th birthday; one of a number of airbnb virtual experiences we had organised for the day due to the UK being back in lockdown. Although I had read on the reviews that Jon's session is great for kids, I booked on anyway and we weren't disappointed. We really enjoyed our class with Jon, who was very friendly and informative. He adjusted the format of his usual session to cater for us OAPs (...well, 30 year olds!) and we really enjoyed it and learned lots. We hope once the current pandemic is over that we can one day travel to SA and meet Jon and, of course, the penguins in real life! Thanks again Jon!

This was a truly remarkable experience. I purchased the virtual experience as part of my best friend's birthday celebration. I felt that Jon and the penguins were celebrating right along with us including some very funny personalized slides made just for Jan. The time literally flew by filled with humor, information and stories. I also realized that not only were we getting great value, but we were giving back since all funds go to help save the penguins of Cape Town. I will be a return virtual experiencer with Jon in a few weeks when I take this again with my grandchildren. Really suitable for celebrating occasions, a fascinating date night, sharing an experience with kids, and much more. GO JOIN JON AND THE PENGUINS!!!!!!

This was soooo fun! Jon was super personable and genuinely cared about my kids’ participation. One of them was getting a bit restless and he paused to see if she was ok. We learned a lot about penguins and the girls had fun drawing their own penguin! Jon also knew about our local zoo and the penguins there!

Jon was fantastic. He took a class of 24 children from our school, yet it felt like he was there for all of them as individuals. He had the patience of a saint, was really encouraging, and his love of penguins and his passion for teaching was contagious. Would 1000% recommend this experience to anyone. On top of all that? Our children don't have English as their first language, but they understood Jon clearly, had a lot of fun and learnt a lot!
