What you'll do

Come with me to get a unique insight into remote village life. You'll take in stunning views of the beautiful mountains and get a real sense of how people live in such a remote area. I'll explain some of the differences in Karen hill tribe culture and the diverse belief systems of the Thai people. As we pass through the village rice field, we will learn how the villagers prepare the terraces and work together to share in rice production. From this viewpoint you will be able to see Hmong village. The people in this village do not grow rice and we will discuss how these two tribes live harmoniously. I'll take you to visit the house of my friend Sa who has deep knowledge about traditional weaving techniques. She will first show you how to use natural products to create colour pigments. Next, she will help you uncover the true identity of the Karen people through practicing their unique weaving methods step by step. We will then enjoy an amazing home-cooked lunch with Sa, which will give you the opportunity to learn about Thai food and ask questions about village life. Finally, we will meet Saokam, Sa's husband, and you will experience the intricate patterns behind bamboo baskets.

Hello, I'm Manuelo, a 28-year-old educator from Thailand and I have been living in Chiang Mai with my family since I was young. I am the president of the Sangob Foundation, based in Chiang Mai. I love the diversity of people living in Chiang Mai (locals, Hill Tribe people & foreigners) and through my work get to help preserve endangered traditions (weaving, music & dance, herbal medicine, local craftsmanship...) through education. When you join me on this experience I guarantee a truly authentic & deep "hands-on" learning experience.

I went with my daughter (9) to Saluang. We had an amazing time with Sa and Saokam, who are super hospitable and friendly. Manuelo and his friend/co-worker were great at explaining everything and patiently translating and answering all our questions. Sa took us through the entire weaving process and helped us to understand the different steps through hands-on demonstrations. We really learned a lot. Did I mention how nice and warm and friendly they are, making us feel really welcome and at home? Also this is a real village not a stage made up for gawking tourists. I can definitely recommend Manuelo and team to anyone who wants to get a underneath the surface for a genuine experience, also they are doing some really good work worthwhile supporting. Just make sure to arrange transport there and back before hand as it's quite off the beaten track.
