What you'll do

This is the perfect cooking class for those who want to go to a small but special market (where many of Mérida top restaurant chefs shop), learn about local ingredients, and pick out the ripest, most flavorful and most rare.. Ever heard of Zapote, Mamey, Achiote? We will explain all about them and let you taste so much more..
Then back to the beautiful colonial style hotel for hands on chopping, slicing and mixing.
This is the time to test the chef with questions like: "what is the secret of a good guacamole?" or "what is the difference between tequila and mescal?", "Can I have a Xtabentum?"
Ai ! we forgot the buy the Chaya, no problem we will harvest it fresh out of the garden.
Meanwhile the panuchos, brazo de reina, cochinita, guacamole, sopa de lima or other food gets close to be ready, Metzin, our charming hostess, took some pictures of you doing all the hard work in the kitchen.
We are sure you will be hungry as a delicious meal will be served in the enchanting courtyard. Please take some pictures!

Rita (Yucateca) met Jan (Dutch) more than a decade ago and together the started a B&B. The B&B grew up and became a rewarded Hotel Boutique. A gourmet restaurant was added only for clients of the hotel and a group of young talented cooks were hired. David and Jacob are the main performers of the stage of this cooking class and grew up with the Yucatecan cuisine. Together with Metzin (the hostess) they form an unbeatable team of the Sharing Traditions Cooking Class & Market Tour.

Jan and Effraim were very accommodating with our last minute request to change our class from a couple of days out to the following day. The environment of our cooking class was in the beautiful setting of Merida Santiago hotel and Jan was very welcoming upon greeting us. He accompanied us on the tour along with Effraim, our wonderful and friendly chef! The tour to the market was close and we stopped along the way to learn about the history Merida, which was very informational and actually reinforced information in other later events on our trip. The market was close which was nice, but very hot during the time we went, so be prepared to sweat. It was really great hearing about Effraim’s journey as a chef, he was great at leading our class and believe he knows his stuff in the kitchen. We were Involved in almost every step of the dish, made 3 appetizers, a main dish and dessert! the experience was great overall and would recommend this experience when visiting Merida.

We had a fantastic time - with a chef, Jamil, who has been a great teacher and shows so much communicative passion for cooking. He also doubled as an amazing guide during the first part of the experience (the visit to the market). Definitely one of the highlights of our stay in Merida

I Had the best time! Jamil (the chef) was adorable and knowledgeable. We cooked from scratch delicious traditional salsa, guacamole, Tortilla Chips, Achiote fish with banana leaf and dessert! If you love food you will love this experience.

The cooking class consists of a walking tour through the neighbourhood, and a tour of the market and some small hidden restaurants and food stands. From there you go back to the hotel, where there is a great kitchen, and you cook a delicious meal with a chef. Our chef Jamil was awesome. He taught us about some key Mexican flavours, how to balance out the acid inside of classic Mexican flavours. The meal was delicious and had several courses - including empanadas, guacamole, an incredible smoked pepitas sauce, and a white fish in achiote sauce wrapped in banana leaf. Really enjoyed ourselves, and had an incredible meal after!

An absolutely incredible experience. I could not recommend it enough. We loved walking around and learning more about food and culture of the Yucatán people. This is so much more then a cooking class! The food is possibly the best part. I promise you will not go home hungry!
