What you'll do

The Cape Floral Region is world famous for the diversity and beauty of its plants. But to the casual visitor, the "fynbos" can look unimpressive. This experience will take you on a journey to learn exactly what is fynbos and what makes it is so special. We will find the primary elements of fynbos: Proteas, Ericas and Restios, as well as many other beautiful plants. You will gain an understanding of the role fire plays in maintaining its exceptional diversity. While walking, we will keep our eyes and ears open for insects and birds, and explore their interactions with the plants. We will take a break in the cool of the trees, where we can discuss the threats to conservation of this unique environment. Your guide is a world expert on the Cape Flora, having studied the plants of the fynbos for his doctorate at the University of Cape Town and now helping to conserve Phillipskop Mountain Reserve in the Klein River Mountains near Stanford. The experience can be tailored to complete beginners and families or those with extensive prior knowledge. The walk is suitable for any time of the year as there are always flowers to be found in every season.

Learn more about Chris

Chris

I am an expert on the Cape flora and passionate about sharing that knowledge with novices and enthusiasts alike. I studied for my doctorate at the University of Cape Town, spending many hours out in the fynbos looking for plants. I now run Phillipskop Mountain Reserve in the Klein River Mountains near Stanford. I have previously worked at RBG Kew and the Royal Horticultural Society in the UK. While plants are my main area of specialism, I have extensive knowledge of natural history in general including birds, insects and geology.
