What you'll do
We'll meet at the Art Seat at Newtown Square and grab a coffee from one of Newtown's best-loved cafes, Barmuda. From here we'll cover a bit of the history of Newtown to give you a bit of a background of how and when our suburb was started. From there we'll check out some famous historic buildings and hear about their past including The Hub, The Courthouse, Newtown Neighbourhood Centre and more. We'll take a stroll along Australia Street and hear some unique tales of an interesting past which also connect to the cemetery - now converted to Camperdown Memorial Rest Park (home of the popular Newtown Festival) and take a stroll through the graveyard where some of Sydney's oldest graves can be found. We'll continue along King Street, covering off some unique street artworks along the way, and head to the old Trocadero and Hollis Park - one of Sydney's most prestigious areas back in the late 1800s. Heading back south we'll also go past some interesting and quirky shopping destinations and artworks including the famous 'I Have a Dream' mural on King Street. The tour will finish at Newtown Markets where you are then free to explore the unique offerings there.
Hi! I'm Jo - a proud Newtown local. I run a popular blog called 'Humans of Newtown' and have been living in the area for over 20 years. Through my blog, I have photographed and interviewed many people who live, work or play in our famously creative and eclectic suburb. My blog was published as a book in 2015 and offers a unique snapshot of our diverse and inclusive neighbourhood. I've heard lots of tales from the people I've met in my years of photographing and interviewing people on the streets of Newtown in Sydney's Inner West. I've also learnt a lot about our unique history and I'm very keen to share this with you. This is a great way for you to get behind the scenes of one of Australia's most quirky neighbourhoods in a relaxed and friendly way.
We'll order a coffee or tea of choice from Barmuda cafe on Australia Street.
Included in the price of the tour is a signed copy of my best-selling book 'Humans of Newtown' (RRP $39.95).
