It was very humbling to take this experience. You are received at the shrine by the sensei and the lovely interpreter Makiko. They have a well planned out introduction to Gagaku, the role of the instruments, and being a musician myself, I asked a lot of questions and both Sensei and Maliki listened and answered patiently. That was great. You'll be able to test out the instruments which is a lot of fun. After trying your hand at the instruments you will be able to listen to a live performance which is very moving. Singing along with the sensei also helps you delve deeper into the music. To top things off you can wear the traditional clothes and take some pictures. You can take them at anytime of course, I personally prefer to put the phone away and focus on the experience. We had a delightful conversation about Gagaku, the shrine, the origins of the music, the rules - it was great and I highly recommend it.
