This bright & conveniently located homestead dates to 1919, or earlier. It's been thoughtfully restored with new bathroom, gas fireplace, fridge, dishwasher, wood flooring, and more. Enjoy the high-desert sunshine and superb trout fly-fishing on the Deschutes River. We are encouraging work retreats and catering to trout fisherman. A professional work environment is present for getting work-at-home office stuff done during the heat of the day, and fishing in the am and pm when it's best.

The space

Maupin is a small community on a high bend of the Deschutes river, which is one of the best trout/steelhead rivers in the world. The cold waters flow through a high desert which receives about 10" of rainfall a year. In contrast to Portland just a couple hours away, Maupin is sunny most of the year and the air is dry; fragrant with the scent of juniper and sage brush.

This house predates the great fire that destroyed most of Maupin in 1922. We know because during our extensive renovation we discovered newspapers used as insulation that dated 1919. There are early photos of the community that show what must have been this one or two room frontier shelter, probably used by the early forest service or loggers. It is right on the main street in town, ideally located near the park, library, grocery store, hardware store, and Rainbow Tavern! (a Maupin institution)

We've installed new hardwood floors, a new tile bathroom, new appliances (french door fridge, dishwasher, washer/dryer stack) and we've also installed a brand new propane fireplace for toasty convenient heat. For convenience in work and play, I have installed high speed wireless internet to feed Netflix and HULU on a new LG tv. A work desk and Aeron chair is handy to the stove for getting some work done in between the morning and evening bite.

Our covered front porch swing is the best place in town to comfortably watch old cars, bike races, and an assortment of other destination rallies. Or relax in the fresh air and read a book. The moon rises across the street in the summer and there is a swift colony in the chimney of the Tudor house you may see if you're lucky enough to be present at the right time. We also have recently finished a beautiful grotto out back with comfy chairs, a fire pit (seasonal ban), and grill. We string a sun shade in the summer.

We planted a living fossil in front! Thought extinct for millions of years, Dawn Redwood dates back to Mesozoic times, some 150 million years ago. Living Dawn Redwoods were "discovered" in West Central China in 1941. Unlike its Redwood Family relatives, Dawn Redwood is a deciduous tree, losing its bronze leaves each autumn and unfurling bright green, silky new needles in spring. A truly unique and fascinating tree, rich in history and beautiful to behold. Dawn Redwood grows very rapidly, easily reaching heights of more than 100 feet at maturity. Say hello to our metasequoia.

Guest access

This is a whole house rental. There is street parking in front and off street in back of the house. Entry is through a key-code front door lock. Since we are right downtown in a small community, we encourage all guests to be respectfully quiet and low-key.

Interaction with guests

Everything the Maupin area has to offer is at your fingertips. There is a fly fishing shop a block down the road and numerous shuttle and raft rental companies. If you have additional questions please ask.

Other things to note

Top entertainment options in the area include fly fishing or spin fishing, white water rafting, drift boat fishing, hiking, hunting, and generally enjoying the sunshine and warmth of this quiet high desert location. There are frequent small town summer festivals, and in the fall the local high school team promotes 'Redsides' football games, which are entertaining.

We stayed at Mark & Ellen's and had a fantastic experience. The house was super clean and well appointed. Right in the middle of Maupin and walkable to the fly shop, grocery and restaurants. The internet was surprisingly fast. Mark emailed us prior to the trip to make sure we were all set and even proactively offered to mail us back a few items we forgot when we checked out. We'd highly recommend!!

Response from Mark & Ellen:
Well I haven't mailed these waders yet, I understand they're LUCKY! :) The WiFi should become amazingly fast soo when Maupin implements 100mb fiber service. I'm signed up and waiting. Thanks

We literally just got done with our stay at this cabin, and we can't thank Mark and Ellen enough for allowing us to stay in their beautiful home. This home was right on the main stretch of town, and Central to all the shops and the market. Getting down to the Imperial River Company for rafting was a very short walk, and it was just a beautiful place to stay. Mark and Ellen were super responsive all the way up until and through our visit. The place was warm and friendly, the amenities were nice, and it just provided a fantastic atmosphere for a hopefully not once in a lifetime experience. Thank you for everything Mark and Ellen!

Vintage Gem on Maupin Main Street Step back in time with modern conveniences! Yes, this little jewel has a dishwasher, paved back yard with fire pit and Adirondack chairs, and gorgeous tiled shower. It's also filled with true vintage touches that will keep you entertained, and equipped with firm beds (so rare in a vacation cabin) and a comfy leather sofa, flat-screen TV, and Stickley chairs. Don't miss a chance to stay in the most character-filled spot for exploring the Deschutes Canyon. Whether you're hiking, fly fishing, or rafting with one of the outfitters just down the street, Mark and Ellen's place is Vacation Central - and steps from the Maupin Market, which makes delicious prepared meals and has all your trip necessities covered. Well worth a stop!

My wife and I live in the NW now but we are originally from the Midwest. We enjoy restoring older homes in our spare time and are working on our fourth project. Professional flippers, we are not! Ellen is a social worker and I'm a corporate communication design consultant.

We enjoy traveling (like everyone else on AirBnB) and we enjoy sharing our properties located in beautiful Oregon off-the-beaten-path places. We're both too busy to worry about a 'life motto' for AirBnB, though we do appreciate guests and hosts who keep things clean. Thanks!
