This is an amazing little gem, if you like old Hawaii. Birds singing, sounds of the ocean in the distant, it's country in a small neighborhood, don't be surprised by a roster crowing, or a mosquito biting. Doug ( the host) is very down to earth and accommodating. Will definitely do one this again

Quiet place. Desirable area. Friendly neighborhood. We had 2nd floor. The master bedroom has queen bed which was occupied by parents they were happy with it. My family of 4 took the 2nd bedroom which has bunk bed. No ladder which made it hard to climb up and down. Matress wasn't too comfy, but did the job for us. The suite was spacious with appliances. We selected this area as we wanted to be close to mountain and away from city, we also wanted to be close to north shore and beaches with big waves about 20 mins away. All in all our stay at Doug's place was good.

This is a nice location for a non-city, island experience. Nice breezes and neighborhood roosters to wake you up. mattresses are not the most comfortable but the kitchen was great - everything you need to actually cook including spices, oil, sugar, and some other staples. A warning to parents: this is a second floor unit. The main door opens directly to stairs that are not closed off at the top. They are wide open to the main living area. There are also stairs on one end of the porch that opens off of the kitchen and om the other end is an open, unrailed area of rooftop deck. We had a 1 and 3 year old so we moved furniture to block the indoor stairs and just avoided the deck for the most part. We had the misfortune of being there while there were guests downstairs and in a second master bedroom that was rented out on our floor. Doug assured us that this is not supposed to happen and hopefully it doesn't in the future because the door to the extra master only locks on from the inside - i.e. They opened it (accidentally) into our space (luckily) while we were there.

While very close to the beach, we ended up driving other places for day time activities. The location was more isolated than we'd typically prefer but we chose it to be close to the venue where we attended a wedding during our stay. There isn't much in the immediate area save for a 7-11, so people looking for restaurants or bars within walking distance probably wouldn't be happy in this location. That being said, there appeared to be some sort of backyard club/event space just a few houses down which was quite loud until around 11 pm, making it hard to keep the windows open to sleep.

Just a quick note on food nearby; Oahu has a food truck culture, with some of the best Thai food in the United States, just 4 minutes drive north of this listing (go to the orange thai truck in Punaluu) which also has amazing Laotian, Vietnamese, seafood, garlic shrimp, fruit smoothies, and Hawaiian food. Also try Waihole Poi Factory just 4 minutes south for the best authentic Hawaiian food on island, for a fraction of the price youd pay at a Luau! There is award winning food at BOBOS grill just one minute walk from the house. There is also the crouching lion bar and grill set to re open within the year. I recommend asking your host about local options as its very easy to miss the best parts of the island. The most scenic part of Oahu is right here in Kaaawa, with the top rated hike on the island, Puu Manamana, within walking distance of the home. Most people assume they know where to go when they actually miss whats right in the backyard. World class canyoneering to a waterfall is just 300 meters walk from my listing, as is the Pill Box hike. All of these options require a quick consult with a local and that iss what i am here for! Thanks for coming, I enjoyed hosting you! As far as location and noise, this is the quietest place you can find. There is no event space or club nearby. This is simply Hawaiians enjoying themselves in a residential neighborhood. As for value, consider that a very mediocre hotel is $275 and up, and does not include any first rate large fully equipped kitchen, or free amenities such as snorkel, surf gear, beach chairs, sports equipment, bycicles, and more. Plus your getting about 7x the space you would get for half the price of a hotel. Its a bargain! Aloha

Doug lives on site and was very responsive to the requests we had. He even let us check in early. The pictures are exactly how the home looks when you arrive and it was very nice. Items to mention: -Roosters in the neighborhood starting crowing at 4am every day. -Locals told us it is not uncommon for drugs to be sold in the neighborhood....although we did not witness any transactions. -Our house was entered in on a couple of occasions when we were not there. -There were tapping noises outside the house every night. -There is no air conditioning in the home but the trade winds allow for fresh air in the bedrooms at night -Pretty much all beach equipment was provided except beach towels -Be sure to confirm prices of activities with Doug before booking. -Lots of kids to play with in the neighborhood made it fun for our kids

I am so glad you enjoyed your stay her in Kaaawa, East Oahu. Your kids seemed to love the family friendly environment here. As for entering the house, I confirmed with you guys regarding accessing the electrical panel in the upstairs bedroom; I had to enter the home several times due to a problem that required me to re set the circuit breakers. I apologize if you felt uncomfortable, and this is only done in case of emergency. As for the safety of the neighborhood, this is as safe as it gets. I am unsure what locals said but ive lived in Kaaawa for 15 years and have never seen any criminal activity. Also, I provide a total of 12 towels for each group, which should be enough for home and beach towels. Thank you so much for joining me on a SUP excursion. The prices havent changed, still $99 pp for Surf lessons, SUP tours, and $65 per person for hiking tours into the jungle. Im not sure about any tapping noises, but i will certainly look into it. Thanks again! Aloha
