House rules

A fantastic house with amazing views of mountains and the sea, it's perfectly situated for a break in the Cape. Only half an hour from Cape Town International Airport, it's in easy reach of Cape Town, penguins at Boulders Beach, Cape Point, Kirstenbosch botanical gardens and the world famous winelands. Just minutes away are Cape Town vineyards, including one of the world's top restaurants, and the great seaside town of Hout Bay with its superb indoor market, voted number 1 in Cape Town in 2019.

The space
Stonepine House has the wow factor. It's stylish, full of light, cool and supremely comfortable. It's equipped with everything guests need for year round holidays in the glorious Cape. There's a woodburner, electric blankets, radiators and warm duvets for chillier months (to see whales, wild flowers and more) and sunbeds, decks, swimming pool and huge bifold doors for glorious summer days. There are cupboards full of decent crockery, glass, cutlery and kitchen kit, plus good internet, a great B&O wireless speaker, games, TV and more, plus a walled garden and spectacular sea and mountain views.
It's a well-secured and much-loved family holiday house in a quiet and safe residential area, in easy reach of Hout Bay's shops, restaurants, beach and harbour - this year (2019) its fantastic indoor market was voted the best in Cape Town.
The kitchen area is great for sharing - cooking, drinks, snacks - while the beautiful glass and oak table is the best place for eating (amazing fresh fish every day from the harbour) and squashy sofas are perfect for chilling out. There's a barbecue for outdoor cooking fans too.
We know security is a concern and we want our guest to feel safe - there's a burglar alarm and electric fence linked to private security, and remote controlled automatic gate and garage doors. We also have Neighbour Watch (and great neighbours).
Our guests are looked after by our experienced co-superhost Anna Paulina Botten and her team, who all live nearby in Hout Bay and are available 24/7.

Guest access
Guests are welcome to use and enjoy the whole house and garden. Cars can be parked securely in the double garage or in the walled courtyard. Only the linen cupboards and the garage storeroom are locked.

Other things to note
Electricity is an additional cost - it's bought at local supermarkets and supplied through a pre-paid meter in the house. It's easy to top up and enough electricity for several days (depending on usage) will be pre-loaded onto the meter at the start of your stay. Anna will explain all when you arrive.
2019 Water Update:
Tap water continues to be safe to drink. Cape Town had great winter rains in 2018 so there is no longer a water crisis. But the city council continues to ask us to be careful in our usage of water and we ask our guests to do the same. It's pretty simple - please keep showers short and sweet, don't leave taps running and please make sure the washing machine and dishwasher are full before using. We restrict the irrigation of the garden to rainwater from a tank at the back of the house, and we've planted waterwise plants. The pool is kept immaculate by our gardener James.
We provide a full basket of logs for the log burner. If you need more, seasoned logs suitable for our log burner are on sale at all the local garages.

Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa

Hout Bay is a medium sized town with a mixed and vibrant community, from the township at Imazamo Yethu to the valley farms and homesteads to the thriving fishing industry. It has all the major supermarkets - Woolworths is high end - and the nearest, Spar, is excellent. It also has a variety of independent and chain shops selling everything from clothes and jewellery to household goods and wine. There are several pharmacies, a post office, book shop and hairdresser/beauty salons. There are dozens of restaurants, from gourmet to takeaway, iconic to familiar. The Lions Club Sunday open air craft market and the weekend indoor harbour market are definitely on the "must do" list. Angling trips, fresh fish shops, boat trips around the bay to see seals and other wildlife (including dolphins and whales, depending on the time of year) and a traditional African craft market are also found in the harbour area. At the other end of the bay is the start of the famous and spectacular Chapman's Peak drive. The iconic Chapman's Peak Hotel at the beginning of the road is great for sundowners, steaks and more. At the centre of the bay, on the beach, is Dunes restaurant. It has a great sandy area for children, and stunning views across the sand to the sea and the mountains surrounding the bay. Behind Dunes is the shopping hub, with excellent stores and supermarkets, restaurants and bars, gyms and services. There are excellent bus services from the centre of town to all parts of Cape Town. Every journey from Hout Bay, whether by bus or car, is a joy with spectacular vistas and venues just minutes away. Go up the valley to Constantia Nek to discover beautiful vineyards and restaurants, including La Colombe, one of the top restaurants in the world. Drive the spectacular Chapman's Peak drive for the best views of the bay and the jaw dropping sight of the huge beach at Noordhoek. Travel the coast road to Cape Town for equally an equally spectacular experience as Table Mountain, the Twelve Apostles and Lion's Head come into view.
Away from Hout Bay, eating out is a fantastic experience in the Cape. This relatively small area boasts some of the best and most beautiful restaurants in the world as well as good reasonably priced eateries, individual and enchanting one-offs and the usual chains. We leave the Eat Out guide for guests.
Entertainment is everywhere too, with a thriving club scene in Cape Town, and a plethora of venues for concerts, ballet, opera, jazz and traditional African music. Late afternoon Sunday concerts at Kirstenbosch botanical gardens in the summer are another definite "not to be missed" experience. Visit www.viagogo.co.za for concert tickets and other events. For sports fans, there's international cricket and rugby at stadiums in Newlands, the Cape Cycle Tour in March and numerous other sporting fixtures to participate in or watch. There are also golf courses in city suburbs nearby, and further out in the winelands which all welcome visiting golfers. Hiking is excellent and there are guided hikes throughout the Cape.
The list goes on. There are whales to watch in the bay from October, spring flowers to boggle your mind on the west coast in August and September, hiking in the mountains, cycle trails and golf throughout the year......
Our co-superhost Anna Paulina is an excellent source of advice on what to do and see in the area to make your stay in Stonepine House as pleasurable as possible. Please contact her for ideas and help.
