The space
Overlooking Cill Chiaráin bay in the heart of the Gaeltacht, Carraig an Iolra B&B is situated in a wild and rugged landscape, reflected in the local folkloric tradition of storytelling, song, music and dance.
There is an abundance of native flora and fauna. The wild flowers and medicinal plants that clothe the rocks and walls is food and forage for birds, bees and butterflies. See the otter, seal, porpoise, diver, curlew, shelduck, mallard, tern, kestrel, swallow and cuckoo compete with gull and crow.
Be it from within the light-filled rooms or outside, the ever-changing light reflected in sea and sky will ground you.

Guest access
Guests have the use of a living/study room upstairs with coffee/tea making facilities. Books, DVDs with a TV set are provided for use for guests.

Other things to note
There are a number of festivals and regattas organised in the locality from late Spring to late Autumn. Some such as Féile Joe Éiniú in early Spring, celebrates the singing of Joe Heaney as does Éigse Mhichael Mháire an ghabha Ó Ceannabháin in late Autumn. Other festivals like Féile Mhic Dara and Lá 'le Ciarán, have continued for over a 1000 years, to commemorate the lives of 2 local saints on their feast days, with traditional boat racing (currach, Galway hooker, gleoiteoig and púcán), music, singing and dancing.

Location

Kilkieran, Galway, Ireland

A quiet rural area on the wild Atlantic way, in a Designated Special Area of Conservation, the homes here are locally owed and inhabited by the same families for generations. There are several safe beaches within 2-3kms. It is also safe to swim off the rocks on the shore in front of the B&B. The nearest shops and pubs are about 2km in the villages of Kilkieran and Ardmore. There is also a post office in Kilkieran and a playground and all-weather playing field a further 1km away. Tigh Chadhain's pub in Kilkieran does lunch and dinner whereas Tigh Mheaic and Óstán Chuan Charna also do food. Locally, the Binn Bhuí hill and Cnoc Mordán are relatively easy hills to climb for the amateur whilst the Twelve Bens and Maam Turks at approximately 25-30km will provide the enthusiastic climber with more of a challenge. Fishing and sailing trips can be organised for guests as well as nature, historical and archeological walks.

An educator and activist, music, poetry, literature and being in nature sustains me, along with the company of my beautiful dogs and wonderful friends and family. I love listening to music. Live music in particular invigorates and energises me, be it traditional Irish, Malian, jazz, classical or contemporary. But it is living in this special and magical part of Connemara I love the most. I can enjoy endless hours alone on the shore, walking the hills or exploring deserted islands and abandoned booleys in the hills. The migratory birds that mark the seasons with their comings and goings, the reappearance of the wild flowers and plants attracting bees, butterflies and birds is uplifting. More than anything its the tranquility of this space, my home place, so close to the natural world that constantly grounds me and gives me inner peace. To me the sharing of our experiences and our knowledge of the world and life itself is probably one of the most important connections in any friendship or relationship. Add to this conversation, good home cooked fresh food accompanied by a glass of wine, a song or tune or two and most things will come good!
