Escape the strain and stress of everyday life and relax & explore the beautiful Chilterns at Wisteria Cottage Watlington Oxfordshire.
Perfect for a short break or longer, it offers guests something really special, a traditional brick cottage built in 1870, with a slate roof and exposed beams, which has been sympathetically renovated to create a charming cosy place to spend quality time with each other. Beautifully presented, this romantic retreat has 2 bedrooms and is extremely well equipped
So proud to announce that VisitSEEngland has just given us a Highly Commended award 2017-2018 after paying us a visit in September. Our latest guests have been romantic couples and walkers coming to walk The Ridgeway and Thames Path who have also given us very complimentary feedback. Come and see for yourselves! Maybe combine with a Spa day or shopping trip to Bicester Designer Village? Or book a table at one of the very well known restaurants in the area, one of which has just been awarded second best in the world. However the cottage also appeals to cyclists, small families, people who want to spend time with family and friends who live locally and business executives. Many of our previous guests chose to stay at Wisteria Cottage to be close to family and friends but still have a degree of independence and are now regulars. However, larger people do need to be aware that downstairs ceilings are quite low at 1.90m and some doorways are quite narrow! Everything we can think of has been provided for your comfort and entertainment like BT WiF and BT YouView TV with 4 BT Sports channels on the 32" tv downstairs and Freeview on the 22" tv in the main bedroom. Enjoy a leisurely read in bed with one of the books from our little library or sit out in the garden listening to the birds. The Red Kites are amazing!
Wisteria Cottage has just been extensively modernised and is heated by gas central heating with radiators in all rooms which will keep you warm and cosy. In addition we have a little wood burner which is so easy to light and we provide a basket of logs for you too.
The cosy sitting/dining room has a sofa and 2 tub chairs for 4 people and a wooden dining table which extends to provide space and seats for 4 people with space saving chairs hidden inside. We have decorated the room with local prints and pictures to give it a really local feel. This room leads through an open doorway to a cream wood Shaker style country kitchen with oak worktops. Enjoy cooking on the electric ceramic hob and electric Bosch oven. A fridge with small icebox, a small dishwasher, a Dolce Gusto coffee maker and lots of cooking and dining equipment provide you with everything you may need. Though a door to back lobby, and a separate door leads to the porcelain tiled bathroom with 1500mm bath containing a wall mounted shower with excellent water pressure and glass shower screen, toilet, small basin, heated towel rail, shaver socket and mirrors. The back door leads to a rear courtyard with a secure cycle store.
Stairs lead from the kitchen to 2 bedrooms. The larger has a fully fitted handmade wardrobe with drawers and a comfortable Hypnos double bed 1.40m for a good nights sleep whilst the smaller has a pine trundle bed 0.90m with second pullout bed below. However there is very little floor space when the second bed is extended. It is really best suited to families with younger children. There is a custom made cupboard with rail and drawers below for your clothes.
The sunny front garden is fully enclosed by fences and has 2 lawns, flower beds and a large patio with BBQ. It is equipped with a table and 6 chairs so you can experience this space as an additional room catching the sun, reading or watching the Red Kites which were originally released into this area. A well behaved dog is welcome downstairs but we ask that you provide bedding, towels, and furniture covers and let him/her explore all the footpaths and fields rather than be let loose in the garden.
Everywhere, inside and out except for one cupboard in the larger bedroom in which I have private property.
Interaction with guests
If required, we will do our best to meet guests but are close by in terms of difficulty and have a local housekeeper and tradespeople we can contact in case of emergency.
Please feel free to like and share our social media pages.
Other things to note
There is a B class road outside the parking area which can be quite busy at certain times especially if a tractor and trailer is passing, and Red Kites fly in the sky. A well behaved dog may be allowed downstairs only ( or bring your own bed linen) but please mention this at time of initial contact.
The cottage is NOT suitable for 4 adults.
Smoking is not allowed inside the cottage
Babies and children are welcome but will need careful supervision as there are hazards like the staircase and stove.
If a dog has been allowed, the owner must bring the bedding for the dog and covers for the furniture. It must not go upstairs and must not leave any mess inside or outside. There are fields 2 minutes walk away for it to use.
It is expected that guests will leave the cottage clean and tidy on departure and the cost of any loss or damage will be taken from the security deposit. This includes makeup etc on towels or bed linen which doesn't come out in a normal wash.
Parties are not allowed.
Guests must not make excessive noise as we have neighbours who like their sleep. It is expected that there will be no noise at all, inside or outside after 23.00
The maximum occupancy is 4 people but we do ask that there is a maximum of 3 adults. If you have 2 adults and 2 young children or 1 adult and 3 children the trundle bed can be set up with one pulled out from under the other. However there is really no floor space but the door does close. If 2 people sleep here, it is really best suited to 2 children in beds or 1 person and a baby in a cot. Please look at the photo of the beds extended with childrens duvets.
I live in the lovely village of Chalfont St. Peter, South Bucks with my husband and 3 adult children who come and go! We have lived in our spacious bungalow for 9 years during which time we have extended and renovated it by adding loft rooms and a large kitchen/diner. We are both very interested in property and I now manage 2 holiday lets, both of which we list on AirBnb, one in Watlington, Oxfordshire and the other near Halifax, Yorkshire in Calderdale where the BBC series "Happy Valley" is filmed. We have renovated them both to a high standard of comfort yet have maintained the traditional character features. We also enjoy travelling, both in the UK and abroad, eating out, visiting historic houses and churches, walking, socialising with friends and family and meeting new people. I try to meet as many of our guests as possible on arrival and do my best to ensure that they feel welcome and comfortable in their new surroundings.
