The space

This industrial building has been built around, and incorporates the first tannery in Barjols built in 1608 by Jean-Baptiste Vailant. The last addition was built just post war. All the tanneries in Barjols closed in 1981 and this tannerie was completely derelict and near collapse when we bought it in 2001 . As visual artists we wanted to build artist studios and living spaces for ourselves and others BUT these studios are offered to anybody who could enjoy the rustic/industrial ambiance of this building.
The four story tannery is situated at the east end of the main street of Barjols against the cliff ,beside the river and water fall,at the foot of the 'Vallon des Carmes' . The river was the water source for the tannery. The backside of the forth floor opens up to our terrace which leads to a plateau which is the beginning of the series of waterfalls and ponds leading up to the carved-into-a-cave chapel of the early Carmelites .
It is the ugliest and most beautiful building in Barjols.

The 70 square meter is on the 3RD floor. We have a lift for luggage . From the studio you have a ancient stairway that leads up one floor to our terrace which leads to a private spot for you beside the river and two rustic paths leading upward into the Carmes. (See photo of table by the river & the Carmes)
If you want to go into Barjols, it is a 3 minute walk , from our steel front door to the center of town.

Interaction with guests

We live here too and will do anything we can to make your stay here a great stay.

Other things to note

You are not in the country side, so , with the big sliding glass doors open, you will hear all the typical noises of a living village with 3000 people who get married, honk horns, have community celebrations and have dogs that bark. Shut the windows and it becomes quite ......Church bell starts at 7AM with the last ring at 10PM... in other words it wont be just the birds you hear, unless you go out to back where you can hear the birds and a watch the fish in our pond .

We had a wonderful stay in Barjols. The space and the view were both beautiful and intriguing, the town exciting to explore and we felt so relaxed to be there. The waterfalls and swimming spot in the back garden were an amazing bonus! Thank you John and Christiane, it was fantastic! X

If you are looking for an off the beaten track Provence experience - this is the place for you. Located in non-touristic Barjols in a converted tannery building, this is by far the most unique Airbnb I've stayed in. The studio is great - light and sunny with a view of the village and beautiful waterfalls literally at the building's back yard. The hosts are great, every morning started with little messages from John suggesting things to do in the area, which we would probably didn't find ourselves while googling touristy things to do in Provence. Would definitely want to come back, highly recommended.

The location is great ! The village is not very touristic which gives an authentic feel to your the stay. It is pretty amazing what John did with the tannery . The apartment is super spacious and modern -one could easily imagine such a loft in the center of NYC. The kitchen is fully equipped, we had wonderful dinners looking at the sunset from the huge patio/bay windows. And what to say about John, super accommodating (we had problems with our flight to Marseilles and could only manage getting to barjols close to midnight), helpful (he knows the area really well) and extremely kind. We had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend staying at the loft.
