Where you’ll be

Barcelona, Spain

Find accommodation in the Raval in Barcelona, the most multicultural neighbourhood in Europe. Did you know that 56% of its residents come from different places in the world? The mixture of cultures, customs and flavours can be found in all its shops, streets and restaurants.

The Raval is in the Ciutat Vella district, in the centre of Barcelona. It runs from the famous La Rambla down to the port, surrounded by some of the city’s most famous streets, including Avinguda del Paral•lel and Carrer Pelai.

Its long history stretches back to the medieval extensions to the city walls, which have left their legacy in the form of mysterious narrow streets, including the long Carrer Nou de la Rambla and Carrer de la Cera, said to be the birthplace of Catalan rumba.

The Raval has a lively personality that has undergone many changes over the years. Today it thrives on vivid contrasts. Discover it for yourself by booking accommodation in the Raval neighbourhood in Barcelona and, once there, sit down in one of its squares to watch the world pass by or try one of the delicious Arab pastries from the local shops.

The Raval was a key area in the Middle Ages, as seen in the lovely Benedictine monastery of Sant Pau del Camp, a 9th century Romanesque church with a beautiful cloister. Another great example of its medieval heritage is the Antic Hospital de la Santa Creu, which was still in use until the 1920s. It is now home to the Biblioteca de Catalunya and its lovely courtyard is an oasis of peace and quiet in the bustling city centre. Other sights include the church of Belén, just off La Rambla, and the church of Sant Agustí, in a square of the same name—two baroque gems you mustn’t miss!

Alongside the old you’ll find plenty of the new in this lively cultural district. Book one of our holiday apartments in the Raval and take in an exhibition at the MACBA, Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, or stroll pass the cool skaters in the square. You’ll find more urban culture, exhibitions and modern art at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, the famous CCCB.

The Gran Teatre del Liceu, the city’s luxurious opera house, where you can also see ballet and flamenco, is another temple to culture and one of the city’s emblematic buildings. Another famous site is the Rambla del Raval, where you can stop for a drink and meet the city’s most famous and fattest cat: the Gat de Botero. The locals like to hang out here and there’s a craft market at weekends.

No self-respecting foodie should leave Barcelona without visiting the Mercat de la Boqueria, full of food stalls specialising in seafood, paellas, noodles and a wide range of tapas. You’ll also find a huge variety of fruit, smoothies and desserts. It’s a great place to go shopping for food to cook at your apartment in the Raval. If you’d rather eat out, you’ll find every possible option in this multicultural neighbourhood, including traditional Catalan food, vegan and vegetarian fare, Italian pizzas and Arab and Pakistani cuisine.

Keen shoppers should check out Carrer Tallers, with record shops and the city’s best vintage clothes and T-shirt shops. Carrer Riera Baixa is also home to lots of vintage and second-hand clothes shops for nostalgic shoppers. Yet another reason to book one of our holiday apartments in the Raval neighbourhood in Barcelona.

If you want to go out at night, the Raval has some of the city’s coolest nightlife thanks to its many trendy pubs and bars. Simply stroll along one of its main streets, such as Joaquín Costa, or explore one of its lively squares. Enjoy your holiday apartment in the Raval!
