The view from Ponna is breath taking. Come by car if you want the trip to be relaxing. Everything else needs stamina - recommended if you're up for it.

Danilo's place is simple but wonderful. Off the beaten track around lake como. A charming house in an even more charming village. Danilo and his family are very hospitable, same goes for the villagers. Price-quality is excellent. Thanks Danilo, hope we will come back sometime!

The road to get to the village is steep and winding but it is worth it. The village is beautiful and everyone we met were very nice and helpful. Danilo's father makes "primitive sculptures" that decorate the place, and he will be happy to show you more of them if you ask. We had a great time there. There is a 24/24 big supermarket near the "di Piano" lake.

Danilos house is very cozy and we loved to stay here. It's small, but nice for 2 people. Downstairs is the kitchen and bathroom and upstairs the sleeping room with a comfortable bed. Outside you can sit on the small terasse and watch the mountain panorama. Ponna is a cute small village in the mountains with about 50 peoples and no tourists. Next big supermarkets are about 20 min by car and a swimming spot at lago lugano can be reached in 12 minutes by car. Danilos family was very friendly and helpful during our stay. We highly recommend PONNA for peaceful holidays.

This village above the lake is a window into the real Italy, not the tourist Italy of Lake Como. We have stayed in many places in and around the lake because we are buying a house on the Bellagio side. When we first arrived we thought it was a long way from the action of the lake. How wrong we were. There is plenty of action here. But it's more a community spirit that, through our rental, we were able to participate in. The owner hs lived in the town many years. His mother gave us a tour of the town and the incredibly beautiful, (and quite large church for a small town), and even the tended graveyard with fresh flowers on the majority of graves. In the heat of summer, it's much cooler than below on the lake and it was very hot when we were there so we were thankful for the cooler evenings and mornings. There are sculpture by Daniele, the owners father, all over the village, inspired from ancient folk stories. Ida has a garden and gave us fresh herbs from her garden, and even some salad lettuce and eggs from their chooks! There are other frescoes done and sculptures done by other artists, ancient and modern, dotted around the town. There's no shop in the village, but San Fedele l'Intelvi is a short and beautiful drive away, about 10-15 minutes. And you can order bread from Ida who gets it delivered if you don't want to go down. Church bells ring often, reminding you of the community spirit of the town. (Every time I phone home and they chimed, on the half hour from 7.30am until about 9pm) friends and family said it sounded so romantic! And we found it so:) The house itself is charming. There's no living area, but we used the outside terrace. The bedroom is spacious and the small eat-in kitchen and bathroom are all we needed. The surrounding countryside is absolutely stunning and I highly recommend a trip up here even if you're staying on the lake. There's a restaurant nearby called Alpe Grande and just below it is the most authentic latteria I've ever seen. The shop is in a farm building on the road. The people selling the cheese look like they grew up from the ground there. I'm sure all their ancestors have owned the farm and made the cheese before them. If you go and manage to find this place, you will write home about it, I guarantee. Even the grandma, who must surely be in her 90s, is there still making the cheeses with her daughter. The daughter serves in the shop and her face is just glowing, emanating, with good cheer with a good life. An experience to see in itself. We bought a lot of cheeses made that morning and some that were older. Be careful you don't buy too much!! Danilo, the house owner, was extremely helpful and communicative with every question...
