House rules
This place isn’t suitable for children under 12 and the host doesn’t allow pets, parties, or smoking.
We are in an urban residential neighborhood just east of downtown San Diego. You’ll love the coziness and privacy of our guest house ("The Barn"), with our urban farm animals (including our chickens and pig) and views into the park that borders our property. The guest bathroom and shower is a very short walk across the patio in the back of the main house. To view an amusing short film a recent guest made of our space, search "A Comedian Crashes your Pad San Diego" on you tube.

The space
The Barn is a detached, fully private, 300 sq. foot studio with a queen-sized, memory foam mattress, a large writing/working desk with great views into the park, a very comfortable reclining reading chair, a small refrigerator, and a TV with cable and Amazon/Netflix apps. There is air-conditioning and heat (although you don't often need either in San Diego).

The guest bathroom is a very short walk across the property (20-25 steps) at the back of the main house and is fully equipped with shower and essentials. The guest bathroom is accessed directly through the back door (you don't need to walk through the rest of the house). The bathroom is private (only you will use it) and we will keep it very clean and tidy.

Unfortunately our guest house is not child-proofed and we cannot accommodate guests with children under the age of 12. Because of the number of animals on our property and other guests with allergies, we also cannot accommodate guests traveling with animals. We trust that you will find another great Airbnb location nearby if you have children or an animal with you.

Guest access
Guest have access to the Barn and to the main house. The Barn has a numeric lock on it. We set it up before your arrival to be the last four digits of your phone number. That way you can access the Barn and lock it throughout your stay without needing a key. You have full access to the large covered patio and we encourage you to use it! It's a beautiful view out into the park and a great place to drink your coffee or have a snack.

Other things to note
The Barn is separated from the main back yard by a fence with a gate. Guests are free to interact with the chickens and Simon the pig. If you are lucky, Mr. P, the neighborhood peacock, might drop into the yard for a visit! George, our outdoor cat, is very friendly and will probably try to get you to pet him you but if you don't like cats, you can shoo him away easily enough. Simon is our rescued pot-belly pig. Although he can be a bit temperamental at times, Simon is generally friendly and we can discuss some basic safety precautions when you arrive.

We are off the main roads and tucked into the Chollas Lake park boundaries, which makes the property very peaceful, quiet, and feels almost rural. However, in reality civilization is right around the corner! There is a small market two blocks away with a delicatessen and a great craft beer selection (for the beer fans, San Diego is one of the best for local brews), a Thai restaurant, and a Mexican restaurant. Within five minutes in either direction you have access to any kind of establishment you may need and we can point you to some cool neighborhoods nearby.

You are welcome to have guests visit with you while you are staying with us, but no parties or slumber-parties please!

We are very close to everything you might want to see here in San Diego (5-20 minutes). One of the reasons why we love living here is the ease of access to everything San Diego. Keith works downtown and loves the 10 minute commute!

Oak Park is a quiet, urban, multi-cultural, residential neighborhood just east of downtown San Diego. Oak Park was recently listed in San Diego Magazine as one of the "hot" neighborhoods in San Diego (see March 2016 issue). We are close to everything in San Diego: Downtown; Balboa Park; Little Italy, North Park, South Park, Mission Valley, University Heights, Kensington, and Adams Avenue shops, restaurants, and breweries; all the beaches; Petco Park and the San Diego Padres; the Convention Center and more. It's a perfect location for access to events such as Comic-Con, San Diego Beer Week, the Rock-and-Roll Marathon and more (either by car, Uber/Lyft, or nearby trolley/bus).

Our property line shares a boundary with Chollas Lake Park, home to San Diego's first reservoir and many hiking/walking/running trails. The lake is now for fishing and is in the center of the park, which also includes a cactus garden, a playground, a baseball/soccer field, and an amphitheater. Access to one of the park entrances is a very easy walk around the corner.

I'm a college professor who lives in San Diego with my wife, Adrienne, three cats, a dog, chickens, and a pet pig, Simon. Most of the animals are rescues. We are generally pretty quiet folks, but open and interested in meeting new people. We love sharing our little urban farm! We also know a lot about San Diego and its hidden gems and enjoy traveling to other cities to discover what's off the path. We are avid outdoor people who love to hike. We are also vegan and strong supporters of animal welfare. Don't worry--we are not going to self-righteously preach, but we will share some recommendations for great local vegan restaurants if you are interested. Look forward to meeting you!
