Wake up to the sound of birdsong, go swimming before breakfast in the clear water of a secluded lake. Cook your bacon and eggs over an open fire while you plan your day, or just laze it away in the peace and quiet of your own personal tipi. You can always go fishing tomorrow, and walk along the cliffs the day after that…

The space

We have 20 authentic style North American tipis made of cotton canvas on a framework of locally sourced wooden lodge poles, bound with twine and hessian rope. These majestic structures reach up to more than 18 feet high, giving you a generous living area. Compared to an ordinary tent, a tipi interior gives you an amazing sense of space and light. Every time you duck in or out of your tipi door you are aware of the sensation of moving through a different world – at times it’s a nomad’s tent, at others a ship on the high seas with the creak and slap of mast and sail – you decide…

Our Tipis

Each tipi is fitted with an external hat or interior lining to keep out the rain - although in extreme conditions (constant driving rain, severe winds etc) we cannot guarantee that any canvas structure will be completely weatherproof. Drips, leaks, muddy doorways etc are an intrinsic part of camping in a typical British summer - it's why the Cornish countryside is so beautifully green! Please bear this in mind before booking with us - especially if you think a hotel or B&B might suit you better. Fairweather camping cannot be guaranteed.

We've also got 2 spacious bell tents on lovely Private Sites.

All the tipis & bell tents are equipped with the basics you might need for your visit - custom-made groundsheets, warm Turkish rugs and candle lanterns.

You’ll get your own camp stove and cool box. We also provide kitchen essentials from teaspoons to teapot. And of course you’ll be welcome to use our pots and pans on your outside fire. See the what to bring part in the 'Other Things to Note section' for a list of the extras you might need.

Our tipis come in three sizes, medium, large and extra large. This listing is for a large tipi.

The medium tipi will sleep 2 adults comfortably or two adults and up to two young children but if you are bringing a travel cot we would advise booking a large tipi.

The large tipi will sleep 4-5 adults comfortably and 4-6 if at least one is a child but to comply with Health & Safety requirements we cannot allow any more than 6, including babies.

We have one extra large tipi on a Private Site that sleeps 6-9.

Tipis are situated in either in the Village Field with 11 tipis, or on Private Sites situated singly or doubly in private clearings. Double private sites comprise one large and one medium tipi or two large tipis. Private sites have their own ‘garden’ bordered by trees and hedges. Although private the sites are sometimes quite close to other tipis and you will usually see the tops of other tipis nearby, smell their woodsmoke or hear the murmur of voices. Please note that this listing is for a large tipi in the village filed field.

Based at Cornish Tipi Holidays/Weddings also known as Tregildrans Quarry. The site is unique. A woodland valley folded around a clear, spring-fed lake created from the old quarry. The hut is at the top of a secret 20 acres clothed in ferns and bluebells, oak and meadowsweet. Undisturbed by modern agrochemicals and herbicides the natural ecosystem has flourished, providing a thriving habitat for flowers and butterflies, birds and mammals.

It’s a place a world apart from the rush and clutter of the modern holiday experience, with an atmosphere that makes you forget the world outside, and just lounge, ramble, or potter about in a boat.

The tent itself is situated in a recently reclaimed part of the site on the old railway line which was taken out in the 60's, guests will have full access to the whole site & all its faculties. 20 acres of woodland to explore and a freshwater lake to swim, boat and fish in. As well as your own private tent pitch.

Guest access

Guests will be greeted & shown into their tipi by one of our site wardens. Once guests have parked their car (in the mini car park) they will have to walk about 1 minute down a footpath with their luggage. Then they are free to explore the whole site.

Interaction with guests

Staff are always on site to lend a hand with starting a fire or which way to the shops. Guests can interact as much or as little as they like with staff.

Other things to note

Please also be aware that the site is a wedding venue, if guests do not check with us first their trip may fall over a wedding. The tipi is just over the hedge from where the wedding reception is held, therefore if staying with us over a wedding it is likely you will hear music until midnight.

What to bring

Bedding* (sleeping bags, pillows & rugs, or sheets, duvets & blankets – it’s up to you)

*We provide the sort of camping mats that you see carried at the bottom of a traveller’s backpack, which are fine for younger children and hardy adults; but like us most of you seem to opt for a bit more comfort, so bring your own airbed (footpump only) or old futon to use as well. If you have a small baby or toddler, travel cots work well in the larger tipis, so do bring one with you.

A great place with very friendly and accommodating people running it. Very basic tipis, but cosy and fun. Lots of space and good facilities. All in all, exactly what we were after!

Response from Cornish Tipi:
Delighted the children loved their tipi & you all enjoyed the location. Unfortunately you were here over some of the worst storms of the summer & our grass can become muddy in places when it rains. We do use matting in very poor conditions but will certainly consider using more in slippery areas - thank you for suggesting this. We also plan to have a food/book/firewood exchange from next year so couldn't agree more with you on this one! We do try to be very clear about our tipis; the family size is an 18' (sleeps 6 max) & the couple's or small family size is a 16' (sleeps 2-3) - we can always explain further via a call or email. Hopefully on your next visit the sun will shine like it is today :-)

Staying in a tipi/tent with family or friends, living close to the earth and the rhythm of nature, is an extraordinary experience. It’s a mixture of old fashioned camping in a beautiful place, with a very modern desire to be more environmentally friendly than just about any other holiday could be. This is the place to explore the landscape of your imagination, the place of your childhood dreams, where you first found adventure, where fish splash in the lake at dawn and sparks rise from your campfire at dusk.

CTH offers something for everyone: couples wanting a romantic break and families on a summer holiday, older campers not bothered by school terms, walkers, surfers, painters, bird spotters, university reunions and special birthday weekends. It’s also perfect for grandparents with grandchildren, honeymooners, wedding anniversaries, fathers and sons, groups of girlfriends with children … we are always a huge hit with children from babies to independence.
