Historic, renovated, train station in the heart of Virginia hunt and wine country. This private oasis sits on the second floor above three gorgeous art studios belonging to local artists. Enroll in an art workshop, enjoy twilight polo and horse races at Great Meadows, or find yourself having a romantic dinner in our little village of The Plains.

The space

The historic train station was built in 1915 and has brought life to the little village of The Plains ever since. The large windows and beautiful brick create a warm and welcoming atmosphere with great light - especially for artists. There have been art studios on the first floor of the train station for decades. Only recently has the second floor been renovated and turned into an apartment.

The second floor, which previously was the Station Master's office, now has 2 bedrooms (second bedroom -cute basic auxiliary- with twin beds), 1 full bath, half bath on 1st floor, a modern kitchen, and a great space for dining and lounging. The kitchen is fully stocked for any baking or cooking needs you may have during you stay. We are within walking distance of great restaurants and shops. See our recommendations below.

Guest access

The Whistle Stop occupies the entire second floor of The Plains Train Station and so everything on the second floor is open to your use. The first floor serves as a studio space for local artists that come and go throughout the day. Please do not go into the artist studios unless you are welcomed by the artist - they are very sweet and usually leave their doors open if they would like people to wander through.

Interaction with guests

My policy is that I'm there when you need me! Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Other things to note

Does the train go by? Yes it does! Please know that the train goes by at all hours, night and day. It is not a passenger train and will not stop in The Plains, so the train will usually go by within a few seconds.

I visited for just one night along with my husband, one year old, and our dog, and it wasn’t nearly long enough! The place both inside and out was filled with charm, and we kept remarking that it felt like we were staying in the English countryside! Caro had prepared the space with all that we needed for a delightful and cozy stay, and gave us lots of great information about the building and the town when we checked in. The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom very well appointed, there was tea and coffee, books and games. The room was spotless (we always get an extra up-close tour of rooms chasing after our very busy 16 month old and often crawling around on the floor with her!) We had a wonderful and relaxing time and will definitely be back.

We stayed for a "girl's weekend" and loved The Whistle Stop. Caro is a wonderful hostess and so thoughtful. The little town of Middleburg is fabulous to shop in, about 10-15 minutes away. Many wineries around to check out. Be prepared for the train to go by but it just adds to fun of The Whistle Stop.

What a unique location! Yes, it’s right by a train route, but it *is* a former train station. There’s some incredible natural light that comes through I. The morning, and it’s spacious enough for maybe 5-6 people. Caro seas very helpful - even showing us through the entire downstairs art studios. It’s close enough to walk to anything in The Plains - including an awesome coffee shop/bike repair place. We had a great time!

Unique stay in The Plains, walking distance to everything in town with accessibility to several attractions in the area. Lots of space and amenities can accommodate a small group. Caro made the stay very pleasant and easy.

If you're looking for a beautiful retreat in the gorgeous countryside, this is the palace to stay. Our group of six women was impressed from the moment we walked up, met our wonderful host, Caro, and the rest of the weekend did not disappoint. The apartment comfortably fit us, and we didn't want to leave! From the stocked coffee/snack bar to the heavenly beds, to the charming town and surrounding vineyards, it is just a perfect place to spend a weekend. My one caveat (and this does not reflect on the property at all, rather the area), is that it wasn't as easy as others have posted to get an Uber. I would put in the request at least 20 minutes before you are hoping to leave somewhere. Also, a few drivers didn't seem to know where they were going and we waited more than 30 minutes more than once. But as for the property, five stars without a doubt. We will be back!

The Train Station was fantastic for our girls weekend. Plenty of space to sleep six and the place was so unique. A quick walk to town for coffee in the morning and a great jumping off point to explore the area; a 15-minute drive to Middleburg.
