The Shipwreck Suite is part of Villa Anita DV's ongoing installation on the Mojave desert's tradition of sculptural dwellings. This sculpture is almost solely built using re-purposed materials carrying forward the villa's commitment to zero waste.

We think you'll love the experience. It feels like you've crash landed in Never Land, which is perfect if you've had enough of adulthood for the moment.

The space

The Shipwreck Suite is built with what were once two dinghies. One has it's end anchored in the ground creating the wall, and the other caps the roof in the old Viking style. The roof and floor are insulated with plastic recyclables accumulated here on the property making it a very eco-friendly structure. The toilet is a flushable composter designed by artist David Aaron Smith out of repurposed wood and plumbing parts. You'll be delighted by the lengths we have to go to to give you a unique experience that's comfortable, but wildly out of the box.

Guest access

Villa Anita is a sprawling art installation that is growing day by day. You are treated to tour the grounds and enter into the minds and hearts of the artists who work on it everyday. Remember, you'll be the last people to see it in it's current stay. It is ever-evolving.

Interaction with guests

We have 6 full-time tenants including the original founders. You'll be able to talk with them about their creation and will see them creating right before your eyes.

We were a little unsure of what to expect when we drove up to Villa Anita. It is hidden amongst a heap of what looks like discarded furniture & bits & pieces outside of the remote town of Tecopa. We were warmly greeted by Ry, Aaron, Carlos & co, & taken on a tour of the 'project'... an amazing haven consisting of pathways & rooms created with discarded treasures. (Our room was partly constructed using a boat as a wall.) There are quiet places to sit under the trees & just take in the remoteness of Death Valley & the desert. Dinner was delicious & we had the opportunity to chat with other travellers who were also staying for a night in the 'Bottle Room.' (walls constructed with 100's of bottles) All in all, it was a unique experience, something my family & I will never forget.

Hernando's place is SO highly unusual that I would consider it an experience more than anything else. Everyone in the house is so incredibly nice and helpful. The whole place is a living sculpture and a never ending work of art. The 6 dogs add an animalistic touch to this intimate treat. This is a night to remember for a lifetime.

Villa Anita is a magical, eclectic, Wonderland of art and amazing people. It's not just a place to stay for a few nights, but an experience that you will cherish forever. First, the place. When I saw the pictures of the Shipwreck Room, I knew it would be a fun place for my dad and I to stay on our photography getaway trip. Mere photos could not do this place justice. Everywhere you look is filled with little treasures and striking art. As we wandered the grounds we found the most delightful resting areas and amazing sculptures. Photo opportunities abound! The place is a living work of art that is constantly changing and expanding. Second, the people. I never expected to leave from this trip with new friend, but that's exactly what happened and I couldn't be happier! Carlo, Aaron, Jack, Sacha, Katelyn, Ry, and the pups are absolutely delightful. When we arrived we were introduced to everyone, given a tour and drink. We sat down to wonderful conversation while an amazing meal was prepared. Seriously, take advantage of the meal options! The food is delicious and the chance to sit down with everyone to eat is wonderful. Everyone is so hospitable and we loved hearing everyone's story. Villa Anita is a dream oasis in the Tecopa desert. When you book a room here, you get the whole package. We are absolutely planning our next trip soon!

Villa Anita is an experience - it's not a room. The guys made a solo traveler feel like part of a family while I was there. The place is really indescribable. If you're looking for something magical, please go here- you won't be disappointed. And definitely eat dinner with them, it's well worth it.

Wow! I'm not sure where to begin. A truly magical experience. I began to miss the villa, it's art, and it's hosts, almost as soon as we departed. My wife and I, and our two small children, were warmly welcomed from the moment we entered the gates. Yes, this was a great environment for our children! Our little ones (aged 5 and 2) were treated with much care and affection throughout. They had so much fun exploring and making treasure maps! I would say there is no requirement to be an artist, or even a scholar of the arts, to enjoy your time here. The positive energy and creativity on display is infectious for all, whatever your walk of life. And the hosts are so friendly and gracious. Those seeking peace and tranquility are well catered for, with numerous nooks and crannies in which to relax and create your own little world - inspired of course by the magnificent art that surrounds you at every step. Can't wait to return one day!

What an incredible oasis! The night I stayed at Villa Anita, I was the only guest. As a female traveling solo, I never felt unsafe. Hernando and the other wonderful crew living at Villa Anita were very incredible, welcoming, and down to earth. When I arrived, I was greated with some wine and a tour of the place. It's easy to get lost in there but it's actually really fun. The artwork is outstanding. The dinner was certainly more than a dinner but rather such a fun experience with great company. The room was really comfortable, the heater on the bed put me to sleep instantly, and it was so lovely to shower with natural light. I only wish I was able to stay a few more days. Thanks so much for a memorable trip, Hernando!

This is an experience that you will not forget! Guaranteed. Villa Anita is a breathing work of art, meaning it is an incredible work OF progress. The idea is not new, but what is so refreshing about Villa Anita DV is its execution of sustainability. You can see how ordinary things are reassembled to create an eclectic living space that is not only visually stimulating and fun, but also comfortable and cozy. A couple of tips: 1. Make sure to get your phone calls in around the Baker area. I called to check in and was told by Aaron that service cuts out in that area. Very good to know! Wifi is provided, but I did not use it. 2. Take advantage of the meals that are served here! For $20 per person, you can enjoy a home cooked meal, in a family-styled setting, with great company. No fuss on your end. They cook, provide service AND clean. 3. Make sure to bring your essentials, but be aware that the drainage system is not the same as living in the city. Try to think about bringing items that are friendly to the ecosystem if possible. 4. You MUST love dogs. That is all. Overall, my friend and I did not know what to expect and were delightfully surprised with the suite we chose. All the living spaces have their own sense of charm. The hosts Carlo, Aaron, Rye, and company provided a lovely and inviting atmosphere. They embrace openness, as do I. This art instillation in DV definitely must see/stay! If you're down to stay in a whimsical space, then this is definitely the place to be.
