Bush Hill Cottage is the perfect place to take a break and forget the stresses of life or use as a base to try the many activities in our beautiful Ruapehu district. We are close to Tongariro National Park and Whanganui River where your adventures can begin. Our place is great for couples, solo adventurers, and families with children.

The space

Bush Hill Cottage is a great place to take time out from your busy schedule, relax and enjoy rural New Zealand.

Our little cottage is in a paddock so the only immediate neighbours you may have are sheep, cows or a horse. There is a lovely bush walk near our house or, time and weather permitting, we can arrange a farm tour for you to experience a small part of farm life.

We are about half way between Mt Ruapehu and the Whanganui River and both offer plenty of options – hiking, camping, biking, jet boating, canoeing or skiing in winter. Pipiriki, on the Whanganui River, is 35 minutes drive away and from there you can take a jet boat to the famous “Bridge to Nowhere” in the Mangapurua Valley. Canoe trips can also be organised or cycle through the Mangapurua to be collected by jet boat at the river.

Explore in the Tongariro National Park with many treks for all levels of fitness and experience. The most famous hike is the Tongariro Crossing, with “Mt Doom”, only 1 hour from us. In winter the Turoa and Whakapapa skifields on Mt Ruapehu can be enjoyed.

Our local towns of Raetihi and Ohakune have fascinating histories – farming, timber milling, railway, 1918 fires, market gardening, ski industry development so hire a bike and check them out. Raetihi is about 10 minutes drive from us and Ohakune is 20 minutes away. Both have information centres and free Wifi at the libraries.

Opportunities for mountain biking in the Ruapehu region are many and varied from easy tracks for first timers to downhill daring rides.

If trout fishing is your passion, there are a number of magnificent fishing sites on rivers and streams including the Manganui o te Ao River and Mangawhero River.
There are also museums, art galleries, numerous cafes and restaurants for your enjoyment.

So what ever your preference when taking a break, we would love to see you at Bush Hill Cottage

Bush Hill Cottage has a quiet, away-from-it-all feel and yet is not too far from Ohakune and Mt Ruapehu. It is a cosy place to come back to after a day out exploring. On the day we arrived the fire was already lit, Cathy was there to greet us, and had baked cookies and milk waiting for us - very nice after our long journey. It was interesting to experience a little of farm life too. My daughter was delighted that she got to milk Toffee the cow.

This is a lovely little cottage conveniently located between Raetihi and Pipiriki, about 45 minutes from the two main skifields on Mt Ruapehu. It's in a paddock near a stream and is very peaceful. The beds were comfortable, with plenty of blankets, and the kitchen is well set up with all the pots and pans and implements you're likely to need. Cathy is a friendly and thoughtful host and goes out of her way to make sure guests are comfortable. Flowers, home baking, and a roaring fire awaited us on our arrival, and Cathy was there to open the gate and make sure we got set up OK. Other thoughtful touches included hot water bottles in knitted covers and a hanging drying rack for snow gear or laundry. Recommended!

We were up for a weekend skiing. Off the beaten track and very comfortable place to spend the night. We really appreciated the fire and home baking. The shower has decent pressure. The views are beautiful. Cathy was very friendly. Highly reccomend.

Great place to relax and unwind where you're surrounded by farm land. We stayed here to go skiing where it was a reasonable distance from both ski fields. Cathy was great and waited for us to lead us back to the cottage as the road she's on has no street lights and secluded. The fire had already been lit and was a nice surprise to find baking and milk. Thanks for the great stay!

What can I say? We had a fabulous time at Bush hill cottage. Exactly what we needed for a restful snow trip. The cottage is warm with a lovely fire and the kitchen is very well equipped for our needs. Cathy and Mike are excellent hosts. Also the farm your is well worth it. We will be back to this lovely peaceful spot!

My husband and I have a deer farm, with sheep and cattle as well. I grew up on a farm and Mike lived in small country towns as a child so we greatly appreciate our rural heritage. We see it as a vital part of NZ and we enjoy being able to share it with visitors.
I enjoy gardening - flower, fruit & vegetable - then bottling & preserving our produce. I'm also very interested in wool crafts, especially spinning & weaving.
