Quiet, romantic retreat on small family-run working farm w. rare & native breed cattle & sheep. Fascinating place to learn about food & the countryside. Great place to stay & explore one of England's most lovely countryside areas. Farm shop, open for 20 + yrs, sells a wide range of home grown & home butchered meats & local flour, beers, ready meals & pies. Nr. Rutland Water, & Melton Mowbray, of pie fame, Stamford & Leicester. Great pubs abound, as do walks & entertainment of every kind.

The space
Perfect for a romantic getaway or a small family holiday with a difference, this is a delightful, totally self-contained, self-catering space, with a large fully equipped kitchen. The kitchen has a large Lacanche Cluny dual Fuel Cooker. This is pretty much the classic farmhouse kitchen, again with high, beamed ceiling, big double Belfast sink, terracotta tiled floor and huge Welsh Dresser. The master bedroom has what is possibly the most comfortable superking bed on the planet. While I appreciate that this might be a slight exaggeration, it really is a key feature of staying here. The bedlinen and towels etc. are from White Company and so our guests get that special touch of luxury in a quiet, stunning rural location. There is a big powerful shower with a large shower rose, & two loos, hence the 1/2 bathrooms under the listing details.
In between the big bedroom and an even larger sitting room is an open plan 'snug' with a charming, extremely comfortable antique 'sleigh' bed which measures 6 ft x 3ft 6 inches. Perfect for anyone of 'normal' height. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SNUG DOES NOT HAVE ITS OWN BATHROOM FACILITIES WHICH ARE SHARED WITH THE MASTER BEDROOM. From here, you come into the large sitting room with its original beams and timber tongue & groove ceiling. A wood burner as well as central heating. There is a huge television and wireless internet connection, two shabby chic Knowle sofas and an armchair. A Persian rug on top of sisal flooring. This room, in turn, opens onto the kitchen described above. There are two sets of French doors which lead from these rooms out to a large area of grass surrounded by Olive trees, vines, roses and other plants.

Guest access
All the internal space described above is excusively for the use of our guests. Depending on the season the outside space may be used by a few other visitors during the day, but will normally be exclusively yours in the evenings. This is a working family farm, but we don't normally make much noise. You have your own parking space close by.

Other things to note
We provide you with the ingredients for a cooked breakfast on your first morning, namely milk, bread, butter, sausage, bacon & eggs with our compliments. Tea bags & instant coffee are also provided. Just bear in mind that this is a working farm. Although not especially noisy, there may be tractors driving past, especially at harvest time. We have dogs and cats around, though they do not come into guests accommodation.

Location

Rutland, England, United Kingdom

The farm is located in a rural location so own transport is essential. We have no close neighbours. We are located up a small lane off the main Oakham to Melton Mowbray road. Our location is a rare slice of classic stunning British countryside, only two hours drive North of London, less if you come by train. Nearest train stations are at Oakham & Melton Mowbray. There is an almost endless choice of activities for all ages and inclinations nearby. Walking and cycling around Rutland Water and of course, sailing & fishing. Exploring local towns and villages. Great restaurants and pubs in towns and villages. Livestock markets, antiques auctions, hotels and spas. Also if the rural idyll becomes a bit too much we have an array of cities within less than an hour by car or train. For true foodies we have Michelin Starred Hambleton Hall, Stapleford Park, The Olive Branch, King's Arms, and Fox & Hounds all nearby.

I run a family farming business together with my two sons and a great team of people. We have a small farm shop specialising in fabulous grass fed meats. Our self-catering venture has been a huge success, helping us to restore & maintain some of the old buildings on the farm as well as to feed our animals and care for them. We are not an 'open farm' as such but one of us is always happy to show our guests around. We have met some wonderful people from all over the world, many of whom have become firm friends and return regularly.

During your stay
Members of the family are normally around as are members of the Northfield Farm team. We are a friendly bunch and will do everything we can to make your stay a great and memorable experience. This includes, if you wish to know, explaining how we farm and introducing you to our animals. We can also arrange courses on a wide range of food and farming related subjects. Should these be of interest, please ask.
If you wish to cook for yourselves here we recommend that you consider shopping at our farmshop either once you arrive or in advance on-line.
