Charming, spacious casita in the shady, quiet pinyon-juniper woodland at the north end of the Sandia Mountains. It's an easy walk/bike ride to Nat'l Forest trails. Well-equipped kitchen, ample parking, private entrance & shady covered patio, wood stove, big windows & mountain view. Easy drives to Santa Fe (35 min) & Albuquerque (20 min). Pets welcome (max. 2) at $20/night (paid before check-in). Bring your pet bedding. NO SMOKING! Prices $39-$109. Texting or knocking are best ways to reach us.

The space
The 800-square-foot (74-sq-m) casita is built partially into a hill, which makes it extra quiet and helps to keep it cool in summer and warm in winter. There are lots of trees and birds all around, which frame the views of the Sandia Mountains. There is a queen bed that sleeps two and a futon that sleeps one adult or two small children -- both in the bedroom and cannot be moved. We also have a fold-down twin bed in the living room/kitchen. We have bedding for all of these arrangements. There are two entrances: one with stairs and the other without.

Guest access
Although the guest house is separate from the main house, guests can explore our more than 3 acres of pinyon and juniper woodland, which includes trails and two ruins. We also have a fire pit that we light on cool weekend evenings. Because we have kids, there is also kid-friendly stuff around.

Other things to note
NO SMOKING: No smoking is allowed inside or outside on this property.
HEATING & COOLING: The casita has radiant heat in the bedroom and bath, and a baseboard heater and wood stove in the kitchen/living room, which keep it quite comfortable in the cold months. There's also an evaporative cooler to keep things cool in the summer.
WATER SUPPLY: This is a desert. We share a well with neighbors and if we are not careful, all our taps can run try. This is not exaggeration. So we require that our guests conserve water and only use what they need.
WILDLIFE: In spring, summer and fall black bears have been known to cross our property. They are not likely to bother a human, but a bear could cause a disturbance at night if it decides to attack our chicken coop or wrestle with our trash can. There are also wild horses here. They are more of an issue to drivers. Drive slow and keep your eyes open! In warm weather watch out for rattlesnakes. There are at least three kinds here and they are even out on warm nights. Watch your step and use a flashlight at night. Wildlife is just part of life in Placitas.

Our home is on a Forest Service road that ends at Tunnel Springs, where hikers from all over start their treks into the designated wilderness areas of the Sandia Mountains. You can start your hike right from the casita's front door. And although it seems remote, we are just short drives away from Albuquerque and Santa Fe. There are also ample services of all kinds in Bernalillo, just 5 miles away.

My husband and I and our three children moved to Placitas in 2005, and we are very involved in the local community. We love that we can walk out the front door and in just minutes be immersed in wilderness. I'm a middle and high school English teacher, and Larry is a science journalist, geologist and amateur astronomer (ask him to take out his telescope sometime!). Our three sons are quiet at night, but some days they can be heard whooping it up on the trampoline or shooting hoops on the driveway. You'll notice a few small boats in our yard because we like to canoe and kayak down the Rio Grande at least once every spring, as well as explore southwest Colorado, camping and paddling around there, when we can get away. We are always happy to share our knowledge of the local restaurants, events, sights and trails.

During your stay
We're in and out quite a bit with our three children, but Larry works from a home office, so he's usually around to offer any help and advice on hiking, sight seeing, and other local attractions.
