Welcome to the "Fiddler's Den Cabin" inside Highland View House. This cozy, yet spacious, log cabin suite on the Cabot Trail is perfectly situated to explore the delights of the island. Relax in the clawfoot tub after a day of hiking or drive around the Cabot Trail and return in time to watch the sun set over the Cape Breton Highlands from the enclosed sun porch. In the fall the colours blaze over the hills and you have a front row seat. Come and visit our island; we look forward to hosting you!
The recently renovated "Fiddlers Den" log cabin suite offers a full kitchen, bathroom with shower and separate antique tub, 2-and-a-half bedrooms*, a large living/dining room, a spacious fully enclosed sun porch and a deck. It is one half of a duplex that makes up what we call "Highland View House".
*The half bedroom is located in the entry-way, so might be best for kids or for daytime napping. The bed is a tiny bit short but can accommodate an adult if necessary and curtains offer some privacy. It's pretty cute!
We are a DOG FRIENDLY rental. The house is of course cleaned between guests, but if you have bad allergies to dogs it may be best to find another rental. We do ask that dog owners please not leave their dog unattended at the house.
We do have to charge tax; the price shown includes the 15% HST.
The house has a view of the highlands but is located about 1 hour south of the park entrance in Ingonish.
PLEASE NOTE: There is no cell service in this area (closest cell reception is about a 10 minute drive), but there is wifi in the house and an internet phone.
You should be aware that the house is a duplex, the other half is also a vacation rental, so there may be other renters on the property while you are there. Each unit is a complete house, but they share a common roof with a large storage space down the middle.
The house is located in a very special area of the island called St Ann's Bay and North Shore. In 2011 we won the Lieutenant Governor Community Spirit Award because we are so awesome! If you enjoy shopping for fine handmade crafts you will be in heaven as the many St Ann's Artisan shops are all nearby. (Pottery, Fine Art, Leather, Glass, Pewter, Iron, Wood, Textiles and more) Just down the road is a local swimming hole to cool off on hot days. There is a wharf about a 20 minute drive north of the house where you can get fresh-cooked lobster (in season from mid-May to mid-July) and have a swim on a sandy beach. The Red Island hiking trail is a short drive away and the Tearoom Ceilidhs, traditional celtic music concerts, are every Tuesday and Friday throughout July and August. The island has a thriving celtic tradition and the St Ann's Gaelic College and museum is 20 minutes from the house.
Our vibrant community is located roughly half hour's driving time to Baddeck which offers groceries, dining, sailing and the Alexander Graham Bell Museum.
Being right on the Cabot Trail means you wont get lost when you do the drive. "The Trail", as it's called here, loops around the central and northern part of the island and takes a full day to complete if you plan on stopping to browse the shops, take in the scenery and enjoy some seafood.
Your hosts are Paul and Sarah, Sarah has Wildfire Pottery about 15 minutes away and Paul is a composer and music publisher who runs Cranford Publications. They are both fiddlers, hence the name Fiddler's Den.
Interaction with guests
We live about 15 minutes away from the property but we are happy to give you some "tips from locals" about what to see and do in our community and elsewhere around the island. Although we have many years of experience in the tourism industry, running Sarah's seasonal pottery shop Wildfire Pottery, this is our first year of hosting a vacation rental so we are open to suggestions on how to make the house and your stay even better. We look forward to meeting you!
Other things to note
As mentioned there is no cellular service at the house. The nearest cell reception is about an 8 minute drive away. The house does have wifi.
The nearest grocery and liquor stores are in Baddeck, about a 30 minute drive from the house so it is best to stock up before you arrive. There is a wonderful restaurant The Clucking Hen about 15 minutes north of the house but they close at 7 during the summer months and 6 pm in the fall, so if you are arriving late then you will need to eat before you come or cook something when you arrive.
This summer, 2017, there is road construction on the Cabot Trail a few km to the north of the house, you may have to wait for 5-10 minutes in a lineup if you are going or coming from that direction.
We are happy to take well-behaved dogs but we ask that you take your dog with you when you go out exploring and not leave them unattended in the house.
- The house is non-smoking, you are welcome to smoke outside but we ask that you keep away from the windows and pick up your butts and dispose of them. Thanks!
- Because there are two rental houses close together we ask that guests please be respectful of other renters and also keep the evening noise to a minimum.
- We are required to charge tax, 15% is included in the rate.
- The rental is dog friendly (sorry, no cats due to allergies) and we will accept small, well-behaved dogs, please let us know if you will be travelling with a dog and please keep your dog on their best behaviour. We ask that you do not leave your dog alone in the house. Please clean up after your dog. We prefer that dogs not be allowed on the furniture. Thanks, we look forward to meeting your furry friend!
We are two fiddle players who also run a pottery shop on the famous Cabot Trail in Cape Breton. Sarah is the potter/artist and Paul composes tunes and publishes Celtic music books in the Cape Breton style. We like travelling and are excited about our new Airbnb hosting venture.
