Sadly, Tootsie's Hideaway is no longer a short-term rental, due to Covid. I've had so many amazing guests; I'm so grateful to all of you!

Secluded & charming, Tootsie's Hideaway is nestled in the hills of upcountry Waimea (Kamuela) on the Big Island.

Dining Nook, separate from bedroom, provides workspace & a place to eat, while Lanai extends living area. Host's friendly outdoor cat may welcome you (not allowed in your space).

Two people max in studio; no guests, pets. (50 min from KOA Kona)

The space
Enjoy a cup of tea or glass of wine in comfy outdoor chairs on your private Lanai, which serves as an outdoor living space, and provides morning sunshine and pink sunset clouds in the evening.

High-speed Internet makes it easy to stream movies or watch a show on your laptop in the Dining Nook (no TV in the Studio). Microwave, fridge, toaster and electric kettle are provided for simple meal prep (no stove or oven). French press & Melita cone filter & small coffee packet & tea provided, along with simple snacks to get started.

The separate Bedroom allows one person to sleep in, while another makes coffee and checks email in the Dining Nook or on the Lanai. (Set up is like a hotel; no kitchen sink.)

The en suite bathroom (shower, sink and toilet) and the ample queen-size bed provide comfortable sleeping. Open the windows and curtains to allow breeze and afternoon sun in, or close the thick curtains for sleeping in.

Nearby beaches have BBQ grills & 3 weekly Farmers Markets & local restaurants give many food options.

Guest access
To reach Tootsie's Hideaway from the street-level parking area, guests descend three outdoor stairways leading through the garden area to the ground level (no wheelchair access).

Guests are welcome to enjoy the yard, rope swing and their private Lanai.

The Host's private space includes the middle floor and top floor of the property.

Other things to note
Again, there are three sets of stairs and NO wheelchair access.

There is a bathroom sink, much like a hotel setup. I provide a small basin and dishwashing liquid and a dishtowel for washing up.

I want to let my guests know that we lost our ability to recycle plastic containers. This means that items you may purchase while visiting, such as gallon containers of water or things with plastic packaging, cannot be recycled and will go in our landfill. We live on an island, so it becomes critical to reduce the amount of plastic.

I have added a Britta water filter to Tootsie's Hideaway and I supply a couple of redeemable water bottles. Please refill these & reuse them (or purchase a cool Hawaii water bottle to take home as a souvenir!)

We can still redeem and recycle beverage containers that are marked. Look for the *HI-5* mark on beverage containers: soft drinks, soda, juice, tea, coffee drinks, water, beer, malt beverages, mixed spirits and wine coolers in metal, glass or plastic containers up to 68 fluid ounces. (We *CAN* recycle wine bottles and glass containers.)

We CAN'T Recycle (so please minimize buying):
Plastics (All types and forms, including plastic bags) & Paper (except for corrugated cardboard & brown kraft paper bags... these *CAN* be recycled).

Consider shopping at the local Farmers Markets (on Wednesday & Saturday here in Waimea, or on other days in other towns... just Search for locations and days). I supply some reusable shopping bags for you to shop. There are quilted insulated bags available at the grocery stores. These are both handy for Farmers Market purchases and handy for keeping things cool for a day trip, as well as making a nice souvenir!

There is a Laundromat in town and some Woolite for washing small items in the sink. There is a clothes drying rack in the room that you can put on the lanai when you wash out small items or to get your towels really dry!

Location

Waimea, Hawaii, United States

Upcountry Waimea (Kamuela on Hawaii Island, the Big Island) is cooler in temperature by about 10 degrees Fahrenheit, when compared to Kailua-Kona, where the airport (KOA) is located. The green grass and rolling hills with grazing cattle remind people of foothills, however from parts of the town, you can still see the ocean, as well as Mauna Kea. At 13,803 ft, Mauna Kea, almost a "fourteener," is draped in a cloak of snow at times in the winter.

It's a 3 minute drive from Tootsie's Hideaway to the coffee shop and other shopping, only two minutes more to the grocery store. The energetic can ask me directions for a low-traffic route to the coffee shop and unique gift stores, or to the Nature Park for a relaxing stroll.

Summer it is generally 70 - 85 degrees Fahrenheit (21 - 29 degrees Celsius). Winter varies from 55 - 70 degrees Fahrenheit (13 - 21 degrees Celsius). Please note: Sudden changes in temperature are common year-round, and the breeze can be chilly. Bring a jacket or wrap to cover up as needed!

I have lived on Hawaii Island (the Big Island) for 17 years & I love our small community. I enjoy meeting people from all over the world & have lived & traveled in Europe, South America & went to Japan this year. I enjoy helping people find the things they want to do & see in our community & on our island. I love having my finger on the pulse of what's happening & if I can't answer your question right away, I can find out the answer quickly! I love connecting people with other people & helping in whatever way I can. I enjoy people from diverse backgrounds with interesting stories to share. I speak Italian & German (although they are a bit rusty!) & I lived in both Italy & Germany, so I understand the challenges of traveling in another country & do what I can to ease things. I also speak a small amount of Spanish & French (can read it better than I speak!). I'm currently trying to learn a bit of Japanese (just getting started!) & have also studied a bit of Farsi! My favorite things are Partner Dancing (Social Dance), such as Ballroom, Salsa, Swing & Argentine Tango. I love traveling & hope to one day see the Taj Mahal, Istanbul, Bali, Tahiti, Cordoba, Grenada, Malta, Vietnam, Thailand... well... I love to travel! I enjoy good wine & fine chocolate. I love sunsets at the beach... sunset is my favorite time of day & I try to see it each day. Surprising fact? I like old cars. Airbnb asked me for my life motto: How about Namaste? The good in me sees the good in you.

Suggestions include:
See whales on a Whale Watch boat tour, approximately November through May; Watch the molten lava spill into the ocean or hike out to the lava flow in Volcanoes National Park; Take a tour to the top of Mauna Kea to see the sunset or stargaze at the Observation Level; Drive down to Waipio Valley (all-wheel drive vehicle required) to see the wild horses and black sand beach; Schedule a helicopter tour to get a bird's-eye view of our island.
