The little house is a cozy, comfortable private house, decorated with collected vintage pieces.

The little house is a private, separate house, with its own entry and parking. It is a ten-minute walk south to the KU stadium, and a ten-minute walk to lovely downtown Lawrence.
The little house is perfect for a single person or couple!

PLEASE NOTE: we recently had extensive foundation work done. The outside area will be pretty rough until early spring of 2021.

The space
The little house was built 110 years ago for use as a bait shop. At the time, it was an isolated building, set apart from the center of town by a few blocks. In the 1970's, the Community Mercantile (now located at 9th and Iowa) opened its first location directly behind the little house, and the little house then served as a bakery for the Mercantile. Then, in 1994, Dan Rockhill purchased the property, built the "big house" (701 Alabama) as a spec house, and rebuilt the little house as a studio living space. Jennifer bought the properties in 1997, and when not traveling, has lived there ever since.
The little house space is 450 square feet, a studio floor plan, with a private bathroom. It's very clean, bright, cozy and quiet.

Guest access
Guests are welcome to the little house space, its porch, and of course the parking spots! Because our dogs bark, it's preferred if guests aren't in the inner courtyard area. There is also a storage basement in the little house that isn't accessible to guests.

Other things to note
THE LITTLE HOUSE IS NOT AVAILABLE TO THOSE WHO ARE IN LAWRENCE TO ATTEND A LARGE GATHERING. If you proceed with booking, we will assume that you understand this and intend to practice common-sense caution while visiting.

COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS:
We are serious about being safe! We are very careful hosts and are taking every precaution as recommended by the CDC.
+We book guests at least 48 hours apart from each other.
+In between guests we use a chlorine bleach cleaner to wipe down ALL surfaces (including light switches, remote controls, coffee pods, utensils).
+All bedding, pillows, throw blankets and dish towels are thoroughly sanitized between each guest.
+We spray the door handle with hand sanitizer when we’re done cleaning.
+We leave hand sanitizer inside the house for guests to use.

We also expect guests to use common sense caution during your stay. Please wear a mask while visiting Lawrence, please don’t attend large gatherings while here, and social distance whenever possible. While I’m happy you are here, it’s very important to me that as an Airbnb host, I’m not jeopardizing the relatively low numbers of Covid cases we have here in Douglas County.

We advise all guests to cancel plans if you are experiencing symptoms linked to coronavirus. Please let us know if this is the case and we will happily refund all costs and fees.
Thank you!

Old West Lawrence, where the little house is located, was the first neighborhood in Lawrence. When William Quantrill attacked Lawrence in August of 1863, his troops came straight through Old West Lawrence. If you walk towards downtown on 7th street almost to Louisiana, you'll see a marker on the ground where three soldiers were killed during the raid. Catty-cornered from that is the former home of the mayor of Lawrence at the time, who escaped the massacre by hiding in a cistern behind the house.
If you look up Quantrill's Raid on the internet, you'll find a lot more fascinating information about the rich history of this neighborhood!
I love living in Lawrence because of the small-town feel. In recent years, Lawrence has developed significantly to the south and to the west, but the original neighborhoods--Old West, East, and North--along with downtown still feel very close and neighborly. It's very unusual for a town its size to have maintained the original downtown and adjacent neighborhoods as the center and soul of its culture and business. Lawrence is a friendly, busy place, and the downtown has fantastic shops, restaurants and bars. The local history museum and the Lawrence Arts Center are also must-sees!
To the immediate south of the little house is the KU campus. The stadium and the Spencer Museum of Art are a five-minute walk from the little house, and the rest of the campus, especially the Campanile area, is lovely to walk through. The Natural History Museum is also a real treat.

Hi! I'm Jennifer, I've lived in Lawrence and have run a downtown business for 28 years. I love it here. I bought my house 22 years ago from the architect who built it 25 years ago, and the little house is the carriage house on the property, a former bakery. My 15-year-old son and our three dogs live here too! The dogs stay inside for the most part, FYI! I love being an Airbnb host. It’s really fun for me to get the place ready and make sure guests have everything they might need. I am very careful to make sure everything in the little house is perfectly clean for guests. I am also very happy to suggest restaurants, events, museums, etc. during your stay. I’ve lived in Lawrence for 28 years and can tell you most anything you would want to know!
