I provide one spotlessly clean room, in a separate bungalow which includes an ensuite private bathroom with both Western-style and Indonesian-style toilets and a shower. The bungalow is situated on 3,000 square metres of land, and is very peaceful and quiet. It would suit travellers of all ages and families. There are many walks and bicycle rides which can be done along back roads, through the rice-fields, down to rivers.

The space

Large room (4.5 m x 5.5 m) in a private bungalow
up to 4 guests
1 double bed (additional mattress available on request)
Suitable for a couple's retreat or honeymoon.
I provide a thermos with hot water for coffee/tea, and breakfast is included. Meals can be arranged.I can arrange rental of motorcycles, and assist in the organisation of trips around Ruteng, as well as to the Spider Rice Fields, Todo, Lake Rana Mese, Labuanbajo and Bajawa.

Guest access

Guests have access to an entire private bungalow, and to all the land surrounding. Parking available for motorcycles and vehicles.

Interaction with guests

Hosted by Getrudis Lawus (Udis). I was born near Cancar, which is 20 km from Ruteng (near the spider rice-fileds), and was educated in Ruteng and Australia (Tasmania). I lived for 10 years in Tasmania, but my heart has always been in Ruteng, amongst the local Manggarai people. I speak and write English fluently, and have worked for Australian aid projects as an interpreter and office manager, in Ruteng, Bajawa and Aceh. Because I am a local, and have been to the main tourist sites myself, I am able to provide a great deal of information about Ruteng and surrounding areas, and organise visits to interesting villages which most tourists don't get to experience. I also arrange visits to agribusiness ventures, such as a Manggarai coffee plantation, and provide lessons on making Tofu.

Other things to note

My Homestay is out of town, and in a beautiful setting on a hill overlooking ricefields and mountainous scenery (it has been described as Heaven on Earth). Unfortunately, it is not easily accessible for disabled travellers.

This must be, by far, the best accommodation in Ruteng. It is located in the middle of the rice fields with a spectacular view. It's also on the way to the hobbit cave, which you should definitely visit. Udis is a great host who really helped us finding our way around Ruteng and getting us on the bus to Labuan Bajo.

Udis' homestay is a little island of peace and serenity, surrounded by ricefields, trees and (soon!) flowers and lots of vegetables. You will enjoy a very large and clean room, with separated bathroom,  and such a comfortable bed. Ruteng climate is cool by night, and the location of hobbit hill, outside the city (but very short way by motorbike, 4-5min), enable peaceful and relaxing night. And so, you will be fresh for enjoying beautiful sunrises on the morning, on terrace (large as well!), breakfast with view on ricefields and mountains in background...! Udis' place is clearly more than a simple accommodation. But (because there is always a "but"), the most important is elsewhere. In Udis herself. Life enables meetings, sometimes to meet nice people, and, more rarely, you meet special ones. Softness, kindness, smile, sharing. Selus, Udis' friend, is also there for you. Really sympatic, clever, friendly, and chef coocker! It would be a pleasure to share time with him, in bahasa indonesia and english (language he has learnt, and would be happy to practice with you). If you like meeting people, Udis will be there for you as she was for me. I am happy and honoured by what we shared, thank you for climbing with me the Ranakah, for making me discover your region, traditional villages and ricefields. Thank you for the meals we shared (home made of course!), discussions we had. Thank you for your simplicity, simply thank you ;-)

Staying with Udis was a highlight of our trip to Flores, it has easily been our best homestay during our 3 months in Indonesia! The bungalow is clean, spacious and cozy. Udis is an amazing and very caring local lady who knows her area very well and will help you with anything and everything. Location of her homestay is also really good, you will be literally surrounded by rice paddies thank you for everything momma Udis!

We had a bit of a stressful journey here but as soon as we arrived we both felt so at home. Udis is such a lovely and caring person, my boyfriend got really ill and she went out and bought us water in the rain. She even helped with getting back to Labuan Bajo. If you stay definitely get dinner here. It was fantastic. I had the veggie curry it was the best curry I have had in Indonesia. Really beautiful surroundings so peaceful and calm and perfect for getting away from the city. Would definitely recommend to anyone.
