House rules

Upmarket serviced accommodation at a "country" estate in the heart of Dullstroom, within easy walking distance of all amenities (restaurants, shops, etc.). There are two small trout dams on the property, for catch-and-release fishing, and a view out over the Highveld plateau. Our house was the show unit for the development. It has: three bedrooms, with two en suite; a double volume lounge and dining room with fireplace; and a kitchen with probably everything you would have at home, and more.

The space
When I saw the house, the big attractions were the view over the plateau, the double volume lounge, and the huge upstairs bedroom. All this, set in a town famed for its trout fishing and nature. We say it is "upmarket", but my wife thinks it is luxury.

Guest access
The entirety of the house and grounds are available to guests. NOTE: Pricing on AirBNB is set for a minimum of four people, with higher prices on weekends as Dullstroom is primarily a weekend destination. We are negotiable the weekend rates, especially for a group of four or more (prices quoted on AirBNB are not representative). Please contact us with details of dates and the number of adults and children, as we accommodate children 3-12 half-price, and 0-2 free. Standard rates are R550 pppn Friday, Saturday, and public holidays, R400 otherwise. Minimum of four on weekends, two weeknights.

Other things to note
The two bedrooms on the first level can be configured to have either a double bed or two singles. Preferences must be advised to Cathrine prior to arrival. The default configuration is singles in both.

Please note that there are several sets of stairs, so there may be problems for the elderly or infirm. In need, a vehicle can be pulled around the back for on- and off-loading (a small set of three stairs), but be careful of buried water pipes.

The property has borehole water, which has not been tested for drinking. Guests are recommended to bring their own drinking water or purchase it in the village.

Daily servicing is provided at no extra charge, except on Wednesdays. This includes making of beds, doing of dishes, preparation of fireplace and braai, garbage collection, etc. We do, however, ask that guests place used dishes in the dishwasher (excluding wooden utensils), and keep the house as tidy as possible to aid the task of servicing. This applies especially on date of check-out, when we ask that you please only leave breakfast dishes.

Extra firewood can be purchased from staff, or in the village. There is also a Weber braai/barbecue.

Although the trout fishing is catch-and-release, guests can pay the housekeeper for caught fish. Please enquire with Cathrine re price. No trout fishing equipment is provided, barring a fishing net.

Location

Dullstroom, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Dullstroom is a weekend destination. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Public Holidays we aim for a minimum of four guests for two nights. There is much greater flexibility midweek.

Up until 1996 the town was a sleepy little Highveld village known only to trout fishermen. It was established in 1888 by Johannes Dull, and the local church was shelled by the British in the Anglo-Boer War. It gained national prominence as the key to the first Sunday Times' one-million Rand "Finders Keepers" competition was hidden behind a clock in the Dullstroom Inn.

I passed through many times en route to Kruger Park in the 1980s, but never stopped. Since then, it has become a popular weekend getaway destination for visitors from Johannesburg and Pretoria, due to its shops and restaurants, trout fishing and golf. Other activities are horse riding, clay pigeon shooting, and hiking. Excursions include the Birds of Prey Centre and Tonteldoos.

Dullstroom is an ideal halfway stop for those en route to the Lowveld and Kruger Park. Most destinations along the Mpumalanga Drakensberg escarpment can be reached within two hours, and several Kruger Park gates within three hours (about 200 kms). The Mozambican border is can also be reached within about three hours, and Maputo in five.
