Location

Chania, Crete, Greece

Perfectly located just in the center of Historic Old Town of Chania. Only a few steps away from the cosmopolitan Venetian Harbor and the famous Lighthouse. A charming area surrounded by traditional restaurants, bars, clubs, popular art and souvenir stores, museums and churches. Only a few minutes walking distance you can find the oldest shopping center in Chania, the Famous Market of "Agora" and all public transportation services.

Chania in one day
At the entrance of the harbor, at the stronghold Gritti, is the Venetian fortress of Firka, which now houses the Maritime Museum. Across you will see the Egyptian lighthouse, built in the 16th century. Continue along the best-preserved part of the city wall, from the Gritti to the Schiavo bastion. The walls of the city of Chania are part of the city’s fortifications against the Ottoman threat, and were designed by engineer Michele Sanmichele. Here in the district of Topanas you can see some of the most beautiful houses that adorn the small alleys. Go through the Renieri gate and admire the elegant arch, which is part of the Palazzo family Renieri (with private chapel). Continue your way through the medieval Jewish quarter. Here lays the 15th century Etz Hayyim Synagogue, restored and reopened in the 1990s after having been closed and in disrepair for a long time. You will then find your way to the main shopping street of Halidon, passing the stronghold of Schiavo. If you take the trouble to go up, you will be sure to enjoy the stunning views of the old houses around the harbor, the hill of Kastelli and the White Mountains. Follow Halidon Street to the harbor, and on the way you will see the Cathedral of Trimartiri, a church from the 1860s. Around the Cathedral Square you will find the whole range of cafes and restaurants. Opposite the church is the Archaeological Museum, the Catholic church San Francesco and the Folklore Museum. Continue further down the harbor, and you will recognize the Mosque of the Janissaries. It is Ottoman and is the oldest building on the island, dating from 1645, once the Ottomans settled in Chania . Today it is used as an exhibition space. Continue along the harbor with the lighthouse in the background on the other side of the wharf. It is worth the 1.5 km walk to see the impressive views of Chania, mostly at night. The district of Kastelli, the oldest residential area of Chania, is located on a small hill, and was bombed during the Second World War, where nothing remains of the former center of Venetian and Ottoman rule. Here also are walled archaeological sites of the Minoan Kydonia. Passing the Arsenal, the 16th-century Venetian shipyards, follow Daskalogianni Street to come upon the 1821 the church of St. Nicholas, which at its top features a minaret. Built by the Venetians, it was converted into a mosque by the Ottomans, like most churches, and became a church once again when the Ottomans withdrew.
The Turkish minaret – which you can see from a distance – was formerly part of the Ahmet Aga mosque and is worth a look, although it may be closed to visitors. Continue to visit the covered market with its many restaurants and food stalls with a wide variety of fruits, fish and meat. Take a break! From here, take the path back to the port through the Turkish quarter of Splantzia. Through the maze of narrow streets and alleys, you will find yourself in an atmospheric decor reminiscent of 1001 Nights. Southeast of the Market in the modern city you can reach the Public Garden, where there is a mini - zoo, a summer cinema, and a cafe surrounded by trees and a playground.
Trekking paradise
The prefecture of Chania is divided by the imperious White Mountains in two completely different landscapes. The section of coastline, with 415 km of coastline, is richer and more populous. The sparsely populated hinterland is one of the most authentic areas of Crete.
At most peaks temperatures below zero are measured and from December until May they are covered with snow. Hanging on the hillsides, many traditional villages with stone houses that face the sun, forgotten by time, make up the interesting destinations of Cretan green. Day by day, more and more travelers seek to explore by going on foot, by jeep, on horseback or by bike. Visitors have the opportunity to learn through the generous nature of Cretan life the simplicity and its unique nature, to enjoy the Cretan diet with a glass of wine or raki, participate in celebrations and feel the roots of European culture. Welcoming facilities for leisure time and shops with handmade carpets, fine jewelry, textiles, traditional furniture, ceramics and high quality homemade products (cheese, noodles, jams, etc.), ensure an unforgettable stay.
