Location

Benidoleig, Comunidad Valenciana, Spain

Nestled in the Girona Valley, amongst olive, orange and almond trees, is the sleepy village of Benidoleig. Located an hour from both Alicante and Valencia, either airport can be used to reach the village.

Benidoleig has a small supermarket where you can buy most things, a pharmacy, a tobacconist and newsagents, a bakery and a florist. There is also a cash machine at the bottom of the village. In the main square there are two bars frequented by locals and expats, which serve food including traditional tapas. A 2 minute walk from the house is the popular El Temple restaurant. In the summer months tables are put outside for alfresco dining. It gets busy so booking is advised.
4km away is the renowned Casa Pepita restaurant. Piscina Pitons, El Cid and La Lloma are all near to the village and serve delicious food. For a more extensive choice, the port town of Denia has many restaurants offering traditional rice and tapas dishes to Chinese and Indian food. The town is built around an ancient Moorish castle which is illuminated at night creating a Arabian nights magic as you dine under the castle walls, beside the marina.

The swimming pool in Benidoleig is open From June - September. There is a 25 metre main pool, and a smaller one for younger children besides it. The cost is 2 Euros per day, with unlimited entry.

Every Thursday there is a small market in the square, 2 minutes from the house. Fresh fruit and vegetables, along with meat and fish are sold. 10 minutes drive from the village is the town of Ondara, where you can access banks, supermarkets, a hospital/doctor and the huge shopping Mall portal de la Marina. With 40,000 sq metres of commercial space, there are clothes shops, shoe shops, phone shops, a book shop. Brand names including H & M, Zara, Lefties, Mango, Levis and Benneton. There are also several cafes and restaurants and a multi screen cinema showing the latest films. The mall makes a comforting relief in the hotter months as it is fully air conditioned.

The surrounding areas of Benidoleig offer some great days out. The 'Caves Of Skulls’ La Cueva De Las Calaveras is located just outside of the village, on the road to Pedreguer. The caves got their name from the many skulls that were discovered in 1768, and display interesting archeological and geological features and artefacts, the path inside is over 300 metres in length. Outside is a small gift shop and cafe.

A beautiful drive to the Altar Waterfalls is worth a visit. The 1.5km walk along the river, passing numerous sources of springs from the rocks takes you to the spectacular waterfall. You can swim in crystal clear waters, known before as the ‘source of health’ and see the century old canal and ditches still in use. There is also a dinosaur park in Algar for younger children.

Close to Benidorm are attractions for all ages. Aqualandia, (a fantastic water park) Terra Natura (an animal park) Mundo Mar (an animal water park) and Terra Mitica (a big amusement park) boasts some of the largest rides and slides in Europe. There is Karting in Moriara and Olivia as well as a children’s dinosaur attraction next to the the karting centre in Oliva.

A 20 minute drive from Benidoleig, takes you into the Jalon valley, with breathtaking views and stunning scenery. Jalon is famous for its local wines, there are bodegas (wine cellars) where you can sample the various wines before buying. every Saturday, Jalon holds a huge market selling antiques, clothes, sunglasses, handbags and more.

Pedreguer, located 10 minutes from the house, has a supermarket, petrol station and holds a weekly market every Sunday. Sellers offer bric a brac, new and used clothes, plants and fresh fruit and vegetables sold by the local farmers.

The castle in Denia can be visited as well as daily boat trips and sunset trips from Denia harbour.

The surrounding areas of Benidoleig has some amazing walking and cycling opportunities. from the house you can walk around the village or walk into the 'campo’ (country) through pine trees and smell the rosemary and thyme beneath your feet. The large entrance doors into the house allow for easy access for bikes which can be stored inside.

The Costa Blanca has more than 170 blue flag beaches to choose from. They vary from sandy to pebbly, hidden in tiny coves, covered by dunes, next to pine forests or under rocky cliffs. There are also beaches for kite and wind surfing and beaches that rent out paddle boards, jet skis, kayaks and boats. The nearest beach from the house is a 15 minute drive through the town of Ondara, which can be seen from the terrace.
The beach of Arenal in Javea is fantastic for children as there are no sudden drops and children can play safely in shallow water as the shore slopes gently into the warm sea. The promenade has a number of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants providing a variety of food to suit all tastes. During the summer months, the promenade is filled with artisan stalls selling hand made crafts.
El Portet in Moriara is also good for children, with shallow water and a small beach. The setting in El Portet is breathtaking as you drive round the road and see the clear waters in the little cove situated below. Overlooking the beach are two restaurants which cater for lunch and dinner, serving tapas and other food. If booked ahead Paella can be prepared and eaten after the sun has set with a glass of wine overlooking the sea.
At the other end of Javea is Cap De Nau which has fantastic snorkelling, as does Cala Moraig and Cala els Pinets.

I live in London with my family and work in property. I have been visiting Spain since a young child and fell in love with the village of Benidoleig. I have been coming here since I was 12 years old. I have traveled and love learning about different cultures and meeting new people. I love swimming, cycling and walking but most importantly spending time with my amazing family.
