Where you’ll be

Klaipėda, Klaipėdos apskritis, Lithuania

Klaipeda is the oldest city in Lithuania. The third largest city of the country was founded in 1252 under the German name "Memel".

The city was up to the 15th century at the Memelburg, directly on the river Dane. The castle was rebuilt several times, which changed the location of Klaipeda.

At the end of the 15th century, the southern boundary of the city extended to today's Theater Square. In 1259 the castle was restored and the territory around the castle, which was once used by the inhabitants of the city, no longer belonged to the residential area. Locals were relocated to the present-day old town. At the beginning of the 16th century, the main axes of the planned Old Town structure were staked out: the two intersecting streets Tiltų (bridges) gatvė and Turgaus (market) gatvė. The territory of the old town was divided into small rectangles. Towards the end of the 16th century, a network of streets and districts was created that did not change much later.
