Our Guest Cottage is 1 of 2 free-standing self-cater holiday accommodation units on our private property, 120 footsteps from Spiros Rocks Beach, in the sub-tropical coastal village of Port Edward, Kwazulu Natal, South Africa, bordering on the Eastern Cape/Wild Coast. Spiros’ pier-like rock formation is a popular fishing spot and its small, sheltered rocky beach is safe and fun for all ages. Please note that our minimum requirement during high season is 4 nights and the rest of the year 2 nights.

The space
GUEST COTTAGE (sleeps 4 adults and 2 children)
Our free-standing Guest Cottage has an open-plan kitchen/lounge/dining area (approx 6 x 7 meters) with a bathroom leading off it (toilet, shower, hand-basin).
There are two small bedrooms (connected with a lockable door).
Bedroom1 has a Queen-size bed and a private ensuite bathroom (toilet/shower/hand-basin).
Bedroom2 has two single beds that can be combined to king-size and joined with a thin top-mattress by prior arrangement.
There is a sturdy bunkbed in lounge that can sleep two children.

PARKING
There is shade-net parking for one vehicle at the entrance door to the Guest Cottage … as well as additional space in the garden for boat and/or second vehicle. There is no sea-view from the apartment as it is street-facing, but the ocean is a mere 120 footsteps from the Cottage ... a comfortable stroll along a dead-end gravel road, the only traffic being that of fishermen, residents and visitors.

OUTDOORS
In a small garden at the back of the house there is a communal entertainment area with concrete braai (barbeque) facility and adjoining table-top and also a concrete bench facing a round fire-pit. From here there is a clear view of the ocean. Firewood can be purchased in town or from the host family.

GENERAL
Our peaceful spot by the ocean is very privileged ... far removed from stressful city life.
Amenities such as food markets, restaurants, café, post office, library, banks, pharmacy, medical staff, hardware, hair salons, craft shops, etc are close by.

In addition to our small secluded beachfront, there are a few more beaches along Port Edward's coastline e.g. "Granny's Pool" (a natural tidal pool) 2km South of us, and Port Edward's main beach "Silver Beach" which is about 3km North of us ... safe for swimming, boating and playing in the waves. Port Edward's Silver Beach is lucky to have the “National Sea Rescue Institution Station 32” on location, with life guards ready and watching between flags. Silver Beach is protected by a shark net end to end.

We look forward to your visit.

Guest access
The Guest Cottage is separated from the Family Residence by a walled-in courtyard that has a big concrete washbasin (sink) for communal use, as well as a washing-line and an outdoor shower (cold water only) for rinsing off after a visit to the ocean or for quick cooling off during hot weather conditions. There are two public laundrettes in town, but use of our washing machine can be arranged for a small cash fee. Behind the guest cottage is a communal outdoor braai/barbeque facility with a view of the ocean. Currently the outdoor area is shared with our Studio guests (if any).

Location

Port Edward, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Port Edward, a popular beach-holiday, fishing- and golf-destination, is typical for South Africa's multi-coloured and multi-cultured nation. We are proud of our one and only traffic light ☺.
Out of season Port Edward is usually quiet, but during holiday season it gets very busy with tourists from all over the world. Apart from restaurants, shops, medical doctors, the warm waves of the Indian Ocean, there are many enjoyable activities nearby such as: golf, bowling, water-world and casino a mere 5 minutes away, horse rides on the beach, quad bike and sledgeway rides, petrified forest, the smallest desert in the world, bilharzia-free Umtamvuna River where the Old Pont offers jet-ski rides, wake-boarding, paddle-boarding and where one can fish, join a river cruise, or just take family and friends on a picnic in a safe picturesque environment. One can walk the aloe trail or join a group cycling track. There is bass fishing, rock- and surf fishing. We have a temperate climate all year round and incredible warm water beaches with marine life like crayfish, mussels and oysters. There are guided tours through the coffee estate and banana farm. One can picnic in the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve. The Port Edward beach is unique in that it has the 1st known early Portuguese settlers’ ship wreck and a lovely estuary, unique ski boat launch site, shark nets, a magnificent NSRI base and a Supa Tube that meanders through a coastal jungle.
