The edge of protected wetlands with storybook views in Tecopa Hot Springs, CA, near Death Valley, The Second Wind is ideal for small group events.

Book well in advance to secure the entire space. We will block your dates on all other offerings.

The space

Lovers of songwriting, yoga, natural health, astronomy, playwriting, geology, birding, massage and of course healing hot springs find The Second Wind a tranquil space to exchange ideas and grow in knowledge.

With a guest maximum of 12 persons, we are an affordable alternative to most retreat centers that cater to larger groups. All manner of gathering is considered as long as they blend into the peaceful wilderness fabric that is our hallmark. We celebrate the exploration of all disciplines and peoples but are not the right place for frat parties or amplified music.

Old friends come to reconnect around the campfire, families have enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner under our blindingly starlit skies.

Reservations include our RVs, sleeping rooms and campground. See our other Airbnb listings for full descriptions of each, and check availability of your desired dates. Unfortunately there is no master calendar, but we only reserve retreats when all other spaces can be included.

Price is per night with the seventh night free, and is for the entire property. (Individual spaces can be reserved on our other Airbnb pages.)

You'll be greeted by unmatched solitude and grandeur, expansive vistas of one of the most exotic landscapes on earth, honest and true relics of the wild west, clean air, healing volcanic waters and endless outdoor recreation opportunities that will stimulate the imagination and soothe the soul in ways that ensure your visit to The Second Wind will stand the test of time.

We have abundant water from mineral wells for bathing, washing, laundry, etc., but it is not potable. Bring plenty of bottled drinking water. Our dry climate requires about twice what one would drink in an area of average humidity.

There is a bar & grill in Shoshone (6 miles north), and Tecopa Hot Springs has an interesting nuveau bistro with an ever-changing menu. Aside from that, we provide refrigerator and various cooking facilities for your use. There are RV kitchenettes, outdoor barbecue grills, a large turkey smoker and what might be the very first hibachi ever made, campfire rings…. your choice. Your propane stoves are welcome in designated areas.

There is a convenience store in Shoshone with outlandishly high prices. Major shopping at normal prices is in Pahrump, NV (pop. 40,000) which is an easy 30 mile drive. Las Vegas, NV is about 65 miles to the southeast. Shop for supplies before you arrive.

Nearby attractions include Death Valley National Park, the Amargosa Opera House, China Ranch, Dumont Dunes, Red Rock Canyon National Recreational Area, Mount Charleston Ski Resorts, the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge or the famous Nye County Brothels (Houses of prostitution are legal in Nevada, you know.)

We are four to five hours from Yosimite National Park, Disneyland, San Diego, Big Bear Ski Resorts, Lake Mead, Grand Canyon National Park, Los Angeles or Palm Springs.

Guest access

All reservations include unlimited use of our private soaking tub fed by deep therapeutic hot mineral wells (chemical analysis available upon request), cooking facilities, outdoor soaking tubs for catching the sun or stargazing until the moon sets. Listen to the wind waft gently over the chorus of frogs in the marsh. Watch migrating waterfowl overhead.

There is no cell service here. Guests may use our land line for calls anywhere in the continental United States. We do not have internet access, but free wi-fi can be had 24 hours a day about a half mile up the road at the library and community center.

Interaction with guests

As requested. Choose quiet and privacy, a bit of wine-and-cheese by the evening campfire, a traditional cowboy potluck or whatever strikes your fancy. Our goal is to make your visit comfortable and memorable.

Other things to note

We are an adults only destination and regrettably cannot accommodate children or pets.

The local coyotes are no threat to humans, but they will eat your dog or cat. You run a huge risk of losing your pet if you bring it here.

The beautifully scenic Amargosa Wetland borders our property and has the only flowing water in the Death Valley region. Numerous ponds and hot springs make it a perfect habitat for a variety of species of birds, mammals and amphibians.

It is also dotted with quicksand, much of which is hidden by crusted salts. We don't hike in the marsh. It's ecologically fragile as well as dangerous. Adults understand this; children sometimes do not.

We prefer to err on the side of caution by taking reservations only for humans aged sixteen and over. Thank you for understanding.

When the family winter retreat in Death Valley passed to me, it was the beginning of an adventure I never could have imagined. This rural oasis on the edge of Death Valley National Park has offered rest and revitalization for friends past, present and future who seek tranquility in one of the most exotic and stunningly beautiful settings in North America. Since June of 2014 Airbnb has made it possible for us to welcome people from around the world who find comfort in soothing mineral hot springs under clear night skies in one of the last truly wild places in the American West. There is no cell reception, no text, no GPS. We use road maps and land lines and like it that way. So if you're looking to truly get away, this is AWAY.

Our patriarch, Mac, was a miner, a sailor, a sculptor and a dreamer who designated his son Justin to be guardian of our Death Valley oasis. For the past forty years Justin worked as actor, singer, writer, director, and teacher all over the United States. A love of public service allowed him to enjoy an avocation in politics. He was six times a candidate and three times elected to public office. He continues to teach performance technique and public speaking and still periodically hits the road with a one man show, "Give 'em Hell Harry," about US President Harry S. Truman. Justin is currently researching an historical pageant to chronicle and preserve the memories of Death Valley's early pioneers.

We love to share a campfire yarn with other lovers of art, humanity and this vast natural wilderness. It will be an honor to host, guide and to get to know you during your stay at our rustic retreat.
