You'll have a dozen shuls at your doorstep, the Kotel in walking distance, the shuk and downtown Ben Yehuda district nearby. Sabbath-observant Jews will find it particularly comfortable.

Shaarei Chessed is a special neighborhood with old world charm. The apartment is a newly-rehabbed unit in classical Jerusalem stone.

The space
This is a luxurious apartment in the heart of Orthodox Jerusalem. Walking distance to everything, but still quiet and charming.

You'll have a large bedroom with 1-2 single beds, a giant closet, and a private bathroom with shower. You'll find a washer/dryer, coffee service 24/7, and even a free cell phone to use upon request.

The main retail street (Keren Kayemet) has a bakery, salad buffet, burger joint and lots to explore. The Old City and Kotel are about 25 minutes by foot, and Machane Yehuda market is about 15.

Your host is an American-born attorney who enjoys sharing tips about his new hometown on request.

Note: since the host observes Jewish customs, you'll need to agree:
-- unaccompanied women should not accept this listing.
-- kitchen is only for coffee service and cold snacks, unless guests are trained in kosher dietary laws (kashrut l'mehadrin).
-- Respect for the Jewish Sabbath is important, especially since the streets are closed off that day -- details on request.

Your host is happy to help arrange for Shabbat meals, cell phones, bus cards, meeting locals, and whatever else would make your stay fun and meaningful. Yerushalayim is a special place, and visitors deserve to see it in all its splendor.

Where you’ll be

Jerusalem, Jerusalem District, Israel

Shaarei Chessed is a corner of the Rechavia district, and just 5-10 minutes from the Ben Yehuda promenade. There's good bus service a few blocks away, and plenty of supermarkets and local shopping. Even so, it's one of the greenest neighborhoods in the city, with Sacher Park right down the block.

When the sun goes down on Friday, and the street is blocked off, and the kids are playing in the street waiting for the parents to call them in for Shabbat dinner... the pretty neighborhood becomes absolutely magical. It's not called the Holy City for nothing!

US-born Jerusalem resident, happy to suggest local tips for a great visit. Can even help find cell phones, catered meals, private tour guides and logistics of religious life in Israel. I can make you "part of the family" if you like, or just leave you alone. Guests will need to recognize the special religious norm of the community and the property. Bookings by folks unfamiliar with kashrut, yichud and other local observances will be cheerfully refunded to avoid any awkward moments. After that, life is easy. And it's all good.

During your stay

I love to connect guests with what they need to make the stay terrific. Sometimes that means I'll stay quiet and out of their way. Other times, I'll help with sightseeing ideas, local foods, Shabbat meals or more. Guests can set the tone.
