The space
The construction of our two-apartment house is relatively new (1970s), set in a neighborhood dating back centuries. The lower holiday apartment is rustic Italian in design with an eclectic flair. The inside space features marvelous natural light, a roomy master bedroom, a well-equipped kitchen, cozy den with daybed, lounge area with futon and desk, newly renovated bathroom and a laundry room. The outdoor space offers lots of privacy without sacrificing the amazing views. The balcony is a perfect place to enjoy a morning coffee with the sunrise or wind down in the evening with a delicious Abruzzese wine. Enjoy a meal on your patio or out back in your yard. Free private off-street parking is located across from your entrance.

Guest access
Directly off of the master bedroom and the kitchen you will enjoy a charming private balcony with stunning views, perfect for morning coffee or wine at the end of your day. You also have a private patio and yard for relaxing and enjoying a meal. If driving, you can park your car our private guest parking area directly in front of the house.

Other things to note
The apartment is not heated, but we offer a lot of warm blankets & comforters, and panel heaters. Even though we do not have air conditioning, the apartment stays very cool in summer.

Apartment suitable for children 12 years or older, as we are not setup for babies or younger children. Check with management.

Though our minimum stay is 2 days, a 1 day stay can be arranged with an additional fee of $25 for cleaning.

Location

Serre, Abruzzo, Italy

The village of Roccaspinalveti sits high up in the Frentani Mountains of southern Abruzzo, with the current town dating back around 1850. The ancient ruins of Rocca Vecchia, all that remains of the original medieval town, command a view of the entire valley below. Looking towards the east is the blue of the Adriatic Sea and to the northwest the dramatic Majella - the stunning mountains of southern Abruzzo.

There are 15 fraziones (neighborhoods) in Roccaspinalveti, with Serre being ours. It's only a 35-minute walk to the town center (just about 4 km), or a 10-minute drive. There are shops, bars to enjoy a coffee or drink, restaurants serving the local cuisine and a small historic center with a stunning cathedral.

Roccaspinalveti is known for its friendly people. As you visit the village or walk through our neighborhoods, you will be pleasantly surprised at the numerous “Ciao, Buongiorno” you will hear. Whether it is from the older traditionally dressed or the younger folks, everyone is happy to greet you. And don’t be worried if you don’t understand the local dialect or even Italian when spoken. Folks here are very willing to help you, no matter what your native language is.

A number of very talented artisans offer workshops, whether just for a few hours, a day or longer. Learn to make cheese or take an egg tempera painting class. Tour the saffron farm or taste the traditional ventricini meats. One of our local restaurants offers a cooking class where you can try your hand at making fresh pasta or breads. Ask about tours & tastings here in Rocca. Also check out Workshop & Tours on our site "casaserre". Contact us for information to help plan your stay here. We hope you will be as enchanted as we are…

John and I were both born and raised in the USA. John is from the upper Midwest and I'm from New Jersey. We met in 2001 while we both were working at a resort in Nelson County, VA. Our first date was hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains. And years after getting married, we are still enjoying our hikes together. Our first trip to Italy was in 2011 for a few weeks. We were immediately bitten by the Italian bug and never looked back. We were enamored by the people of the small villages, the food (of course), the beauty of the land, ancient and historic ruins and culture, the beaches, the mountains, and the list goes on and on. We visited a few more times, made the decision to get my dual citizenship and retire somewhere in Abruzzo. Now that I have my dual citizenship, John has applied for his through marriage to me. We permanently moved to Italy in the fall of 2017, renting a farmhouse between Atri and Silvi Marina in central Abruzzo. In August of 2018, we purchased our house here in Roccaspinalveti (southern Abruzzo) and we are definitely 'home'. Both John and I have backgrounds in hospitality and customer service. A few years back, I multi-tasked in a bed & breakfast located in the mountains of Virginia, front desk, setting tables for breakfast and changing bed. In recent years, I worked at a visitor center for a whisky distillery. My job encompassed whisky tastings and bar-tending, retail sales as well as tour guide through our whisky museum and distillery. John, being a professional chef for the past 25 years, worked in some renowned restaurants. He also was an executive chef at a lovely B&B. We bring our experience to Casa Serre, but mostly, we wish to share our love for rural Italy and its people with you during your stay. We hope you choose to get off the beaten path and find us here in Roccaspinalveti.
