Where you’ll be

Pentidattilo, Calabria, Italy

The village of Pentedattilo stands perched on the cliff of Monte Calvario. The name derives from the Greek penta + daktylos = five fingers, inspired by the shape of the fortress which resembles a cyclopean five-fingered hand.
In the second half of the seventeenth century the town of Pentedattilo was the scene of a cruel crime known as the Massacre of the Alberti. The disaster caused by a love denied and by a betrayal that turned into a bloodbath, surrounded the muffled and almost fairytale atmosphere of the mountain of Reggio in a dense aura of mystery, destined to last up to the present day.
And as history and popular imagination inevitably intertwine, the terrible story handed over the quiet village to the legend. It is said, in fact, that when Lorenzo Alberti was shot to death by the baron, he put his hand on the wall, leaving the imprint of the five bloody fingers, and that this is still visible in the cliff of Pentidactyl when, in the light of the dawn, the rock walls hit by the sun turn red.
For this reason Pentidactyl is referred to as "the hand of the Devil" and it is said that on winter evenings, when the wind rises between the gorges of the mountain, interrupting the silence of solitude with its hiss, you can still hear the screams of anger and pain of the marquis. Over the centuries, various legends were born around the muse with five fingers raised to the sky, whose large sandstone rocks, illuminated by the red light of the dawn, really seem like the earthly signs left by an intervention divine.
