The space

Tranquil, Tropical, Private - Walk to Black Sand Beach - Studio with Kitchenette

The Oliana Cottage on the Hilo side of the island is located in upscale Puna Beach Palisades across from black sand clothes-optional Kehena Beach. This 370 sq ft cottage with kitchenette is located away from the street and behind the owner's house on a 1/2 acre lot. Located off the beaten path, along the Kalapana-Kapoho "The Red Road" scenic byway. You are just minutes away from Kalapana, Kapoho, swimming at the warm ponds, and snorkeling at the tidepools. You can hear the waves crash against the cliffs in the cottage and you used to be able to see the ocean from the driveway. The jungle now surrounds the cottage on three sides obscuring the ocean view.

Sunlight and gentle tradewinds fill this charming studio Cottage.
Please note that we are closest to the Hilo Airport (45 mintues). Kona Airport is 2-1/2 to 3 hours drive away.

It is a short hike down the cliff to the famous black sand clothes-optional Kehena beach. A five minute drive to Kalapana for a Hawaiian beach, convenience store, farmer's market (Saturdays) and live music on many nights, especially Wednesdays. The Oliana Point seen in the spectacular coastal photo above is literally across the street. Swim with the dolphins or whale watch in season.

The Oliana Guesthouse is smoke-free, pet-free, and cleaned and supplied with organic natural products containing essential oils for the comfort of those with allergies.

This studio w/bath has one queen-size bed, separate bath with large indoor shower, and a fully-equipped KITCHENETTE with small refrigerator (under the counter), microwave, toaster, 2-burner portable electric stove-top, blender, toaster-oven, Foreman electric grill, teakettle, and coffeemaker. Anything else you may need is available on request.

The Cottage and the main house share a hot/cold outdoor shower, in addition to the private shower inside the cottage. All linens 100% cotton provided. Free wireless internet and free domestic long distance (US, Canada, Mexico).

Iyengar-style yoga props may be borrowed.

Please ask about recommendations to local massage therapists, boat tours or guides for hikes to the lava.

If you came here from an Airbnb ad that said I am located in Hawaiian Paradise Park, that is not true. HPP, as we call it, is located 25 miles from here and is the largest subdivision in the US with over 8800 house lots. Puna Beach Palisades, where the Oliana Cottage is located has only 150 1/2 acre house lots, total, and maybe 50 house structures in the neighborhood.

Guest access

Enjoy the outdoor shower with hot water, shared with the front house.

Interaction with guests

Owner gives personal welcome orientation whenever possible. I'd be delighted to socialize. If that is what you want, let me know.

Other things to note

If you Book Same Day, I may need at least 3 hours to make-ready the cottage. Mahalo!

I absolutely loved my experience at Babette's cottage. First of all, the location is wonderful if you're there to experience the lava flows (by land at least - not sure if there is a better location to stay if you plan on doing a boat tour). Secondly, the cottage itself is immaculately clean and quite lovely in its minimal styling. This is a very peaceful and quiet area and it feels remote - just what I was after. At night, you will see an extremely impressive night sky and will hear the soothing song of a massive amount of coqui frogs. I felt transported here to something very much outside my regular experience. It was haunting - the stars, the frogs, the volcanic surroundings, the remoteness, the roads with their beautiful tree canopies, the deep quiet. Babette was a wonderful host! Starting way before my trip, and throughout my time at the cottage, she was very responsive to my communications and very helpful and thoughtful when I had questions about the area. She was also very warm and friendly in person. Lovely experience! I would absolutely stay here again, and I highly recommend the cottage if you're looking for something peaceful, clean, and well-priced, in a very special area.

Babette has the most lovely cottage out near the Black Sands of Kahena Beach. My wife and I truly loved our stay. In fact, this was our absolute favorite part of our 9 day journey, in large part due to Babette and the lovely cottage she has prepared for her guests. She is truly an artist, we loved the details, the sounds of the jungle, the proximity to the coastline, the vibe of the community and the Frogs!!!! We would absolutely come back and stay with her again! Thank you Babette, it was amazing!

Babette's house is close to a lot of sights well worth seeing. Babette had arranged with a plasticized map that was great and we followed that one. Snorkling in the tide pools is the number 1 item to do if you have little time. Biking to where the active vulcano goes down into the Ocean was also well worth the it. If you are like us and cannot be without TV news, then good to have you xfinity app and login on your phone or PC. We used the iPhone and that worked well streaming over Wi-Fi. We had a great stay!

Brilliant place, secluded and very relaxing. Perfect location close to the lava flow on the south of the island. Babette was friendly and welcoming. Definitely recommend this place for your visit to the big island

What an outstanding place! Babette's description of the place, the location, the drive, and the restaurant recommendations are spot on. The cottage is spotless. the shower has hot water and great water pressure, she provides all of the essentials, and the bed is very comfortable. The sheets are adorable!! Having all of the windows open and waking up in such a remote location while it's still twilight outside is very centering. The cottage has such a calming ambiance and Babette is a joy! The drive down the Red Road to the cottage is such a fun ride and stopping at all of the beaches and parks is a must do. You will miss it if you don't stay here! Thank you again - I cannot wait to come back to Pahoa.

This is a great place that is literally steps or a short drive to beaches, tide pools, lava fields. Every Wednesday night there is a great local market with lots of great food, live music, and folk art to enjoy!

B, what a charming & lovely way to experience Hawaii for the first time! I love the "lonely Puna roads." It was just what I needed to relax and refresh my spirit. Thank you for your suggestions, your stories and your music. I hope you will visit me on the west coast sometime and I hope I can get back here to visit you again. Aloha until then, E -- July 2009

You are a delight and so is your cottage. I hope you will clear the calendar when I next call, because this will be my place every year! -- K, March 2009
