An Tigín- a small but perfectly formed wooden cabin in the grounds of Old Rectory Retreat.Your writing desk looks through glass doors to its' cottage garden by the stream. It has full kitchen facilities. Living and sleeping areas are semi-separated.

The space
The Tigín was added to Old Rectory Retreat a few years ago to facilitate writers, artists and anyone looking for her/his/their own intimate space in which to work, inspire themselves, relax or use as a base to explore the countryside for whatever reason.

The Tigín is set among trees on the banks of a stream. It's a cottage style wooden cabin with its own garden surrounded by a picket fence. The natural world around is lush and beautiful.

The cottage has a surprisingly spacious feel. The interior was lovingly designed and built with great attention to detail, by my amazing sister and her husband in between writing and sewing stints. They know how to make the very most of small spaces. You will have full kitchen facilities and a tiny but beautiful shower room. Sleeping and living areas are partially divided by full length presses. The bed can be single or double sized to suit an individual or couple.

The cabin has been used in the past mainly by writers but also by artists who wanted to sketch or draw and by musicians writing songs. Also many people have wanted to stay just to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

The all important writers desk looks out through large french windows which are south facing or you can take your work outside and listen more closely to the gurgle of the stream.

Guest access
Guests to The Writer's Cabin have their own wild garden surrounding them. It is totally private to them. Old Rectory Retreat- the Main house - is across the stream but well hidden by willow trees. It's a historic building dating from 1852 now comprising two adjoining homes. In in normal times, but unfortunately not during this Pandemic period, in the Main house we also host Writers, artists, musicians and anyone seeking a quiet retreat from 'the madding crowd' In 'Churchside' , Mick hopes once day soon to host people in two large bedrooms, each with double and single bed, but which can also be let as singles. His kitchen is available to guests staying at the Main house by arrangement, self-service breakfast is supplied. Guests at The Main house are welcome to use the sittingroom, which has a piano and can also be set aside for the use of musicians again by arrangement. Unfortunately all of these arrangements are suspended due to Covid restrictions at the moment.

Other things to note
There is a minimum stay of one week May to August, of 3 nights in September and of 2 nights October to April.

The surrounding area is a warren of lovely country walks on roads which don't have very much traffic (and on which cars cannot travel very fast anyway!) This makes it ideal for writers who need to refresh their batteries before sitting with laptop or paper again.
I can give you maps and guidelines.
Unfortunately, while we re only 5km fro Westport town, the Main road is no longer suitable for walking due to increased traffic. There is a longer cycling route (on laneway, country road and final stretch on coast road has a dedicated cycling path)

A little further afield and you reach Croagh Patrick, our holy mountain and a coastline on which there is a beach every few miles.

You can head for Leenane, the Killary and Connemara, our back garden.

Cycling is very popular especially the Greenway to Achill and bikes can be hired from Westport Town.

We are situated just 3 miles from Westport with all its’ tourist amenities, art and craft shops and music most nights of the week.

I’m Róísín – your hostess and general organiser. From the first time our family set eyes on The Old Rectory at Knappagh we knew we wanted to share it with others…so this is a dream come true. I’ve written with and been involved in writers’ workshops on and off over the years and worked in amateur and community drama in one of many past lives. Having hosted and cooked for so many family and friends’ gatherings which included evenings of music and poetry and found our house offered a creative space in many ways, it seemed a logical step to extend our hospitality to the wider community. These days I have a new partner in my son Maitiú. Maitiú is 25 and studying Performing ~Arts with Blue Teapot in Galway. When he's at home he helps keep the Togón clean and tidy and welcomes guests. This year he also plans to do a bit of gardening. The hens are his good friends because he looks after them so well.

During your stay
i'm Róísín and I look after The Writer's Cabin and host Writing weekends at the Main House. I'm always happy to help with any questions you might have about the house, the surrounding area, walks, tours, town etc. Just come up to the Main house and knock on the kitchen door. For those who don't have their own transport, I'm always happy to give lifts to town whenever possible and to collect and return guests to the station in town.
If I'm not available, Mick who lives Churchside at the Rectory will be co-host.
