Experience a bit of the laid back life Batticaloa has to offer in this basic but nice house near the lagoon. A great place to use as starrting point for trips to Batti Town, Kallady/Navaledy and Pasikudah, or to enjoy the sun(set) from the rooftop.

The space

The house is located in Paalameenmadu, a quiet neighborhood in Batticaloa and a very nice place to be. Located near the Lighthouse area, guests can take boatrides across the lagoon, visit the small fishmarket in the morning and see (and hear!) the many birds around the house throughout the day. The house itself was entirely wiped out by the Boxing Day Tsunami, but was recently rebuilt. So recently, in fact, that it is fair to say that the finishing touches still have to be done (but we're not talking about the Hitlon anyway, so who cares). It's a nice, two-story house that towers over the much smaller houses in the neighborhood. The bedrooms share a bathroom per floor, and downstairs there's a living room, a dining room, a kitchen and a place to park cars. And, much like a cherry on top, the rooftop terrace provides a great place to relax and enjoy the sun(set).

Interaction with guests

Mr. Thambirajah, the owner of this home, was born in Batticaloa but now lives in Europe. It is Mr. Selvaraja (see photo) who will welcome and take care of you. He speaks a bit of English and can arrange food, transport and even some local activities, such as a boat ride through the lagoon. In case you get stuck in translation you can always call us.

Sangara's house is in a quiet, residential neighbourhood next to the lagoon. It is central, within walking distance of Batticaloa Fort and Gate, and Kallady Beach. There is a good restaurant for fried rice and local dried fish a few hundred metres away on the main road (Milleth Restaurant). Thamimi Hotel, near Batticaloa Gate, offered a good breakfast. We didn't see any other tourists until we walked over to Kallady Beach. The room is on the upper floor, sharing a balcony with the other guest room. All of the essential facilities are provided: en suite shower-toilet room, fitted mosquito net, and ceiling fan. The room is clean and comfortable. With the fan on, the room is comfortable to sleep in at night. The balcony is shaded in the morning and into the afternoon. Sangara is very helpful, and was available throughout our stay to provide information and answer questions. I recommend this house if you want a simple, well-priced room in Batticaloa and don't need AC or WiFi.

The room was clean and tidy. It was nice to listen to all the different sounds in the neighbourhood on the balcony during the evening. The location is on walking distance from the bus which is pleasant. Our host Pria welcomed us in her parents home and showed us around. In the morning she made us a delicious noodle-veggi-egg breakfast! Thanks for having us and good luck with your studies!

We only stayed for 1 night, arrived late and had to leave very early. So we met the very friendly family only shortly. Communication was easy, since the daughter speaks very good english. The room was clean, equipped wit a fan and we had our own bathroom. Also the view from the balcony was very nice. We can absolutely recommend this place.

It was a nice experience to stay here. Location was pretty easy to find, relatively close from Batticaloa train / bus station and walking distance from the market :) We arrived a bit earlier than their check in time but had no issue to check in immediately. Balcony was an unexpected bonus which we really liked. However they put a flannel cover over the mattress that is usually used in winter as we know. Therefore it was very difficult to fall asleep due to the warmness of the bed :( (Batticaloa in Aug is boiling hot, I can say that). We barely managed to have 2~3 hours of sleep and woke up multiple time. Apart from the bed, We enjoyed our stay.
