Safety First: We have 2 studios here at our home in a quiet residential neighborhood. We sanitize all surfaces and air out the studios between guests. Please expect the highest safety standards. We are committed to keeping families safe.

This light basement studio really was our aunt's for years and years--and she was a very proper Norwegian woman. Galley and gorgeous bathroom. There is a private front patio for Auntie's guests plus a shared area with gas grill, picnic table and umbrella.

The space
Of our 2 studios here at The Johnson House, Auntie's Hideaway is priced for the budget conscious traveler. So if you don't mind a daylight basement hideaway where you hear the polite doings of a household and skittering kitties above, you can book a real find for a reasonable price. Check out the reviews; guests who've stayed with us over our 20 years in business love The Johnson House whether they book our adorable and affordable Auntie's Hideaway or our private deluxe backyard cabin, Grandpa's Bunkhouse. Pet guest fee is $75/pet/stay. Dogs and cats only.

Amenities for Auntie's Hideaway

-Galley with microwave, toaster oven, and compact fridge for storing snacks and light cooking
-New locally made queen bed with quality linens and comforter.
-Terra cotta shower with bench and hand-painted Talavera sink from Mexico
-Double egress windows for extra light
-Wireless internet
-Free street parking--1 vehicle per party, no motorcycles or rvs
-Easy access to public transit
-Back patio for outdoor dining & lounging
-Sustainable no-chem kitchen gardens front, back, and curbside
-Cats and dogs welcome. Pet guest fee is $55/per pet/per stay, payable on arrival. Pets may be left alone for brief periods in the studio if they are house trained and do not bark.
-Please note that Grandpa's Bunkhouse, our backyard cabin, has TV, but in our main house and Aunties, we do not have televisions.

Our daylight basement studio was our proper Auntie Kirsten's bedroom for decades. She appreciated it because our home is a tight little bungalow, built for solidity, a pleasant fortress against the elements. So rest assured that our studio is clean and fresh, without dampness or any other problems associated with basements in home that are not well constructed.

Feline Alert: We have 2 indoor/outdoor cats. They go into the studios on occasion so we cannot host anyone with allergies.

Guest access
Guests have access to the common outside areas: picnic table, lounge chair, and front patio fountain area during the warm weather.

If you need laundry services, we can point you to a great laundromat sandwiched between a stellar cornmeal crust pizza parlor and a colorful Cuban restaurant where the desserts delight.

Other things to note
Airbnb is all about travelers having a home away from home. Of connecting with locals. Of experiencing all the small touches hosts offer to help invite guests into their cities and cultures.

Here you will get a glimpse into Portland's DIY and kitchen garden culture. We did all the tiling in ourselves and also got into some green building by recycling wood from our brother's righteous old workbench. And Jean grows a 4-season organic garden.

Feline Alert: We have 2 indoor/outdoor cats. They go into the studios fairly often so we cannot host anyone with allergies.

Neighborhood: We are just off Noodle Flat where you can get pepper salted squid at Thien Hong or wood fired pizza over at our brand new and wildly popular Otto's.

Plenty of parking is always available, and you will get a glimpse of life beyond Portlandia. Unlike Portland's trendier neighborhoods, our Northeast area of the city has solid roots that go back generations. Indeed, our grandparents bought this bungalow in 1950 for their retirement, and we have kept it in the family ever since.

Expect a congenial place where neighbors help neighbors.

Your host, Jean Johnson, is a retired historian, real estate broker, and 4-season organic gardener. She uses maps to help orient guests to Portland and its unique areas. On occasion, Jean takes interested guests with her for Chinese foot massage--a truly unforgetable experience. Ditto for the local neighborhood 4 of July fireworks--just blocks away.
