Where you’ll be

Sessa, Ticino, Switzerland

Sessa, once the most important municipality of Malcantone, is today a village of 650 inhabitants on the slope of a hill at the foot of Mount Lema, which gently rolls down to the Ticino river.
The town offers a view into history that is of great interest but scarcely known to the larger public. The visitor may indulge in exploring traces of the past, visiting the Law Court building, the wine press (1407), the Medieval Church of Santa Maria, the Renaissance church of Sant'Orsola and also the Provostal Church, where it is possible to admire the main altar, a wooden masterpiece, representative of the Lombard Baroque art, which has been recently restored and brought back to its ancient splendour.
The area of Monte Sceré, as in all of Malcantone, has a subsoil rich in minerals, and various metals such as iron, lead, silver, and gold, extracted already in the 18th century. For this reason, Malcantone has been included in the national inventory as "One of the largest mining districts in Switzerland".
Until 2015, the entrance to the Costa di Sessa mine was abandoned and inaccessible, hiding an underground maze with over two kilometres of tunnels dug by the miners on five different levels. This 375-meter tunnel, known as the "Leonilde", is now open to the public to explore the spectacular and characteristic elements of the mining world.
The Sessa mine is unique, offering the only possibility to experience the history of the extraction of gold minerals in Switzerland.
Sports lovers will also be pleased: in fact in the surrounding area all kinds of sports may be practised; from tennis to golf, from horse-riding to swimming, from sailing to windsurf.
In general Ticino is known for its natural beauty, its lakes, hiking trails, the Merlot wine produced in the south and the many cultural heritage sites spread across the region.
