The cutest house that was once a tent, hidden away in the creative heart of Victoria's goldfields. That’s The Miner’s Pride. If you like to stay somewhere with soul and character and warmth, then this will delight you. Secluded, with private garden on all sides, it’s only a few minutes’ walk to the centre of Castlemaine.

Sleeps 2 and is the perfect couples getaway.

Note we can't accommodate children and the house is not baby-proof!

The space
The Miner has eclectic tastes. Textures and stories, that's pretty much the currency. Work by local artists, vintage bits picked up from dealers around town, great reads and all sorts of interesting things.

All you need do is turn up! And wander into town to pick up supplies or dine out (make sure you book!), have an afternoon Aperol under the verandah of the Theatre Royal and catch a band, or just relax here in the garden, listen to the birds and read a book.

This is a cottage renovation with a difference. Our aim was to reuse everything existing, and to revamp it to give it new life. Our motivation was environmental - bathrooms, kitchens, all renovations in fact, are incredibly resource-intensive. Far better to try to use materials where the embodied energy has already been spent. This means that things aren't all new. The bathroom is still a 30yr old bathroom. We hope you enjoy exploring what works - while we acknowledge that it's imperfect. We think that's part of the joy!

You're as close to the centre of town as possible (5min walk to the Theatre Royal, Mostyn St shops), but even so you can sit on the verandah in the sun and know you're in the country.

Note that there are single steps inside, and the shower is over the bath. Wifi is currently not connected.

We are unable to accommodate children and the house is definitely not baby-proof.

We currently hold a 24hr buffer between all bookings, to allow for thorough airing/cleaning/sanitising.

Also note that a $50 cleaning surcharge applies to pets. The property is not securely fenced + pets must be supervised at all times, both indoors and out.

I've timed all the walking distances. I'm older than most and not particularly fit. Bear in mind that everyone has different walking speeds, however, and these are based on my experience and that of friends.

Where you’ll be

Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia

Castlemaine is just fun. It's a lively, vibrant town with a strong cultural bias, a strong hotrod culture, and great coffee. It's nothing if not eclectic!

If you’re here on a Wednesday the afternoon Farmer’s Market is literally around the corner, with all sorts of local fare for a picnic. There's also the weekly Wesley Hill market down the road a bit, and a monthly farmer's market. (Wesley Hill Market - 15min walk) For the more active spirits, we’re by on the Leanganook Track section of the Goldfields Track, so walk out the front door, mount that bike or stride away. For the mountain bikers, La La Ba Gawa is 10mins drive away. And you can hire bikes right in town.

All the interesting heritage goldfields places are an easy drive away, as well as the artists’ and makers’ collectives and studios to find. The Mill houses artisans, makers, foodies and the Vintage Bazaar - and on Sundays you'll most often find a band at Shed Shaker Brewery (30min walk). On bands, there's always a gig in town, whether here or at the Theatre Royal (5min walk) or The Bridge (30min walk).

Pretty much whatever you'd like to do can be found here! Just ask and we'll set you on the right path!

I'm a landscape architect and academic, and I think I'm doing a phd but sometimes I'm not sure about that. I like food, and travel, and cats, and music and my husband Jeff. And other things too, but this isn't a dating site after all. And I really like getting to know other people's towns as well as just hanging out and walking them.
