Two acres on protected wetlands. Spellbinding views into Death Valley National Park. Natural hot spring pool. Tranquility. Discovery. Quiet you can feel on your skin.

Retreat. Reflect. Connect. Unplug. Unravel. Unleash.

The space

We have a mix of rustic accommodations. From this page you can reserve the Library Room pictured here. Rate is for two adults.

Campsites situated to maximize the views, RV hookups, a motor home or the entire property can be reserved at a variety of prices through other pages here on Airbnb.

No matter, the solitude and grandeur of our two and half acres of pristine desert vistas, the clean air and outdoor recreation limited only by your own imagination will make a visit to The Second Wind stand the test of time.

There is true quiet to be had at The Second Wind.

We have abundant water from mineral wells for bathing, washing, laundry, etc., but it is not potable. Drinking water is available at a public county well about three miles north. Bring containers or bottled drinking water.

There is a bar & grill in Shoshone (6 miles north), and Tecopa Hot Springs has an interesting nuveau bistro with an ever-changing menu. Aside from that, we provide refrigerator and various cooking facilities for your use. There is a kitchen in the main house, RV kitchenettes, outdoor barbecue grills, a large turkey smoker and what might be the very first hibachi ever made, campfire rings…. your choice. There is a convenience store in Shoshone and major shopping in Pahrump, NV (pop. 40,000) which is an easy drive of about 30 miles. Las Vegas, NV is about 65 miles to the southeast.

Nearby attractions include Death Valley National Park, the Amargosa Opera House, China Ranch, Dumont Dunes, Red Rock Canyon National Recreational Area, Mount Charleston Ski Resorts, the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge or the famous Nye County Brothels (Houses of prostitution are legal in Nevada, you know.)

We are four to five hours from Yosimite National Park, Disneyland, San Diego, Big Bear Ski Resorts, Lake Mead, Grand Canyon National Park, Los Angeles or Palm Springs.

Guest access

All reservations include access to our private soaking tub fed by deep therapeutic hot mineral wells, cooking facilities, outdoor soaking tubs for catching the sun or star watching until the moon sets. Listen to the wind waft gently over the chorus of frogs in the marsh. Watch migrating waterfowl overhead.

Interaction with guests

As requested by the guests. Choose absolute quiet privacy, a wine-and-cheese campfire potluck or anything in between. Our goal is to make your visit memorable.

Other things to note

We are an adults only destination and regrettably cannot accommodate children or pets.

The local coyotes are no threat to humans, but they will eat your dog or cat. You run a huge risk of losing your pet if you bring it here.

The beautifully scenic Amargosa Wetland borders our property and has the only flowing water in the Death Valley region. Numerous ponds and hot springs make it a perfect habitat for a variety of species of birds, mammals and amphibians.

It is also dotted with quicksand, much of which is hidden by crusted salts. We don't hike in the marsh. It's ecologically fragile as well as dangerous. Adults understand this; children sometimes do not.

We prefer to err on the side of caution. Thank you for understanding.

This was my second stay at The Second Wind and my second stay in the Library room. My friend and I had a wonderful 24 hours soaking in the pool and the outdoor tubs...many, many times...and sleeping in the nicely air conditioned bedroom. The other guests and the hosts were friendly while also respecting our solitude as we were wanting it. I missed seeing Justin this time around but his sister, Gloria, and her husband were welcoming and generous hosts. I hope to make it back to the Second Wind for a third time or more.

Justin's place was lovely! I enjoyed a morning soak in a mineral bath. Justin's sister, Gloria, was actually our hostess this time -- she and her husband were very kind! We got in pretty late, and Gloria waited up the whole time. She was also up early with coffee for us! The space was fun, I'll definitely visit again in the future and plan for extra time to spend there.

Justin's place is amazing and Justin is very worried about making you comfortable. We ended up sleeping in the RV (which we wanted in the first place) and it is clean, big and comfy. The spa is absolutely delightful (nudity required ). Because of the weather we haven't tried the outside tubs (nudity not required), but it looked like a fun experience to have. Perfect spot between Mojave national preserve and death valley NP.

My boyfriend and I wanted an adventure near Death Valley and that is exactly what we found at Justin's enchanted sanctuary. Justin was extremely accommodating as a host and went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable, welcomed and entertained. His kindness will never be forgotten. He told wild tales of the history of the property, what is in it (you will have to see it to experience and to understand it!) and what surrounds it. There was not one minute we were not fascinated by something. Justin is one of a kind just like this magical place that he brings to life. He also has an amazing set up - indoor hot springs (for the healthy and beauty enthusiasts - all pumped straight from the ground! Wow!) and outdoor bath tubs! There really is not a place like this out there so for those who are a little adventurous at heart, I highly urge you to put this on your to do list! The library room was adorable. A room filled with sea life inspired books. The AC kept us really cool throughout our stay too. I would recommend it! A few things that I would also highlight... when people tell you there's no signal in Death Valley, there really is no signal! So unlike us, who only managed to organise this too last minute but Justin was still so kind to have accommodated us, plan ahead with the directions because GPS won't take you to the right place. And it is not safe to trust your GPS to take you there. Justin gives a very clear and simple set of instructions that will take you there safely. Bring lots of water too, the heat out there is no exaggeration! And bring bug spray if you want to sit out and night and watch the stars and the moon kiss the sky! Thank you Justin for having us both!

We had the most amazing stay! So relaxing, beautiful and nothing like anywhere else. We enjoyed soaking in the old fashioned tubs watching the amazing sunset. And the stars. Wow! But the sweet host Justin is an attraction himself. The kindest man we met on our entire roadtrip - fun, welcomming and entertaining with lots of great stories. We would love to stay at Justin's again and highly recommend to others!

An incredible experience. The hot spring is quite unique, and using Justin's directions, the location was not hard to find at all. Our only regret is staying one night and so happen to catch the only rain day in Death Valley, thereby missing the stars.

When the family winter retreat in Death Valley passed to me, it was the beginning of an adventure I never could have imagined. This rural oasis on the edge of Death Valley National Park has offered rest and revitalization for friends past, present and future who seek tranquility in one of the most exotic and stunningly beautiful settings in North America. Since June of 2014 Airbnb has made it possible for us to welcome people from around the world who find comfort in soothing mineral hot springs under clear night skies in one of the last truly wild places in the American West. There is no cell reception, no text, no GPS. We use road maps and land lines and like it that way. So if you're looking to truly get away, this is AWAY.

Our patriarch, Mac, was a miner, a sailor, a sculptor and a dreamer who designated his son Justin to be guardian of our Death Valley oasis. For the past forty years Justin worked as actor, singer, writer, director, and teacher all over the United States. A love of public service allowed him to enjoy an avocation in politics. He was six times a candidate and three times elected to public office. He continues to teach performance technique and public speaking and still periodically hits the road with a one man show, "Give 'em Hell Harry," about US President Harry S. Truman. Justin is currently researching an historical pageant to chronicle and preserve the memories of Death Valley's early pioneers.

We love to share a campfire yarn with other lovers of art, humanity and this vast natural wilderness. It will be an honor to host, guide and to get to know you during your stay at our rustic retreat.
