The MatopHouse, the African home of wandering travel writers, is a carefully considered sanctuary. It is enveloped by a garden frequented by birds, hares and duikers, and has views of the Karkloof hills. The MatopHouse is full of character (and books), and is a tranquil space in which to read, write, cook, create – and simply "be". Set on a quiet eco-estate on the fringe of Howick, it is close to many MTB & running trails, the Midlands Meander, Midmar Dam, and numerous cafes and attractions.

The space
The MatopHouse is a superbly comfortable and carefully designed home that sleeps a maximum of four people. Its location close to Karkloof makes it ideal for trail runners and mountain bikers (plus, we have bike-cleaning facilities and a secure, lockable garage for bikes); the house is a wonderful base from which to explore the Midlands, and is a stone's throw from the Ambers, making it a convenient base for those wanting to visit family there.

The MatopHouse has two bedrooms. The main en-suite bedroom is downstairs, and the spacious studio space upstairs – with an extensive worktop and antique writing desk – forms the second en-suite bedroom. This room sleeps two people, and the stack beds can be configured as one single, two twin or a king-size bed.

Central to the building’s unconventional design is the natural temperature-regulating system, which has an organic lung and a solar chimney that keep the home delightfully cool in summer and cosy in winter. It is a light and airy house; all rooms overlook the garden, an open field and out towards the Karkloof hills.

Highlights of The MatopHouse include:
* The captivating “book nook” library, which envelopes a day bed
* The lounge – cozy with a fire in winter, and with two walls of folding glass doors that open onto the veranda and garden
* The wide veranda and its swinging chair, a perfect sundowner spot
* The braai-pit / mini-boma, set between yellowwood trees
* The al-fresco dining area, under white stinkwood trees
* The wonderful en-suite bathroom in the master bedroom, featuring a large dome-shaped shower and a view of Karkloof
* The large studio space upstairs, which is also a second en-suite bedroom

The kitchen is very well equipped and includes a four-plate stove and oven (both gas), a microwave/convection oven, blender, slow-cooker, Wonderbag and baking equipment. There is also a coffee-bean grinder, French press and a moka pot. A full rack of spices is available, as well as basics such as coffee, tea, sugar, olive oil, sunflower oil and flour. There is a fridge with large freezer, a dishwasher, washing machine, space in the garage to store bicycles, and a covered parking area.

Please note:
* Due to the design and decor of the house, we cannot accept bookings from families with children under the age of 10.
* Due to estate restrictions, we are unable to accept bookings from guests who are travelling with pets.

Indlovu DC, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

The MatopHouse is set on an eco-estate that shares a boundary with Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve; after heavy rains, you can hear the roar of the Howick Falls. The estate is a haven of indigenous trees and flowers; there is a wide variety of birds here; duiker and scrub hares can often be seen in the evenings.
The popular Village cafe and Woolworths Food are just a down the road; St John's Lifestyle Centre (with Pick n Pay and Clicks) is a short drive up the road, as are the Ambers, the Karkloof Farmers' Market, the Old Mushroom Farm lifestyle hub, Karkloof Club and the network of MTB trails.
