The Bougainvillea Rm is a large room upstairs, with skylights & a cubby for the queen bed, with its own heat and AC. It is the quietest room in the house with an adjacent bathroom sometimes shared with the Bunk Room if anyone is in both. Janine and her family live downstairs.

The space

Independence is a town with real people who talk to each other and there are multiple cafes on the few blocks that make the center of town. A town by the same name as the guest home, Taxco, Guerrero MEXICO (pronounced ‘Tasco’), is the town Janine’s grandmother lived where her door was open to the hungry wanderer.

Guest access

THIS LISTING IS A SEPARATE LISTING
FOR ONE ROOM.
[There are four guest rooms total in the home. To rent 3-5 rooms together there is a separate listing under TASCO HOUSE if you want more than one room.]
We are especially kid and youth friendly.
THIS LISTING:
•The Bougainvillea Room, as we call it, is the room facing the back yard. It has its own air conditioning unit as well as heat, since the sky lights can otherwise heat it up or cool it down too much, and has a double bed and an adjacent bathroom shared with the Bunk Room if anyone is in both rooms.
•The kitchen and the laundry is on the first floor, the dance or entertaining room, is all available to guests as desired. There is a large seasonal glassed-in porch with a dining table that faces the front street, also available to guests.

[OTHER ROOMS ON SEPARATE LISTINGS:
•The Beach Room, as we call it, is the room facing "D" Street with a private full bathroom.
In addition to the private bathrooms, there is one bathroom upstairs and one bathroom downstairs.
•The Library Room is a cozy side room facing a large tree with a private bathroom.
•The Bunk Room is the fourth room on the front side of the house with a large cherry bunk bed, welcoming children and youth, as well as adults, and shares the full bathroom with the Bougainvillea Room if both have guests. (The house is on a corner lot with a peaceful yard in back.)

Interaction with guests

Janine can be available as called for, or to give privacy as needed. She works some evenings and nights and every other weekend, with her work based at home, and getting called out to do nursing visits. On work weekends, the contact could be minimal with immediate access via texting. The hosting goal is to be supportive in the ways diverse guests need.
We hope to be responsive to need and spontaneity.

Other things to note

Please note that 2hour parking signs on front of the house are dated and no longer relevant -- you may park there as long as you need.

Even after reading all the reviews, I didn't expect to see such a charming house. Tasco house has an old world feel with real wood floors and period furniture. It's very clean. My room, the Bougainvillea Room, is at the end of the hall upstairs away from the other rooms and really nice and cozy. I had a large comfortable couch on which to relax and read, a desk, a nightstand at the foot of the bed, and a comfortable queen bed in a cozy nook (I'm picky about mattresses and it's firm enough). AC and fan are provided and skylights were covered, since it was 90 degrees when I was there in August. The AC and fan together were just enough to cool the room during the day and more than enough for me at night, but it may not be cool enough for some people. Everything was very very clean - the linens, the floors, the sofa, the rugs, the kitchen, the bathroom ( which was just outside my bedroom door); I'm very picky about cleanliness. Janine was thoughtful to provide an extension cord with more outlets. There were enough lights in the room; I'm also picky about that. She also provides robes, a hairdryer, keys to lock your room, and instructions about amenities. Arranging to meet Janine was very easy and she was very helpful answering my questions within a day, before and after I made the reservation, since I was coming for the total eclipse and worried about crowds, parking, etc. Tasco house is more than I expected. First, it's 2 blocks away from the center of Independence with cute shops and cafes, and one block away from the cutest cafe, Pink House Cafe where I ate Eclipse day lunch and dinner. When I walked in the front door to Tasco House, there is a large screened in patio with an area on each side to relax - table and boardgames on one side, and table and chairs on the other side, with lots of houseplants. Then there is a large living room with a beautiful oak floor, then a sitting room with a piano and another sofa, then the adorable kitchen with a beautiful tile floor. I love that almost all the rooms (not my bedroom, but the bathroom) have live houseplants. Even though she mentions to bring earplugs because the train runs right near the house, it was very very quiet when I was there. Maybe the trains weren't running then? To sum it up my whole experience in a few words - charming, peaceful, accommodating, helpful and clean. I would definitely stay here again! Thank you Janine!

Janine is most accommodating and very sweet. The house is beautiful and interesting. The upstairs room I stayed in had a portable air conditioner. It had pulled away from the wall and was heating the room instead of cooling it. After I found the problem and pushed it back into place the room cooled down very quickly. A great variety of books on hand, but I was surprised that it had no window. The sky lights must be wonderful in the winter, when they let in the sun and warmth. I would stay there again.

Janine is such a great host. Open communication throughout our stay (a month). She was very respectful and gave us our privacy. For our first time using Airbnb, not once did it feel awkward living in someone else’s house. The house itself is beautiful. Conveniently placed next to downtown independence. Walking distance to restaurants, convenience stores, bars, park; etc. 4th of July fireworks were amazing from her front porch. Janine granted us pretty much full access to her home. Kitchen and laundry were available when needed. Wifi was exceptional. She also had a library of books and games for your entertainment. She was able to offer my family of 4 two rooms for a very reasonable price. We stayed In the Bougainvillea and Bunk rooms. The Bougainvillea room was very roomy and comfortable. It had a full size bed a sofa and a desk. The only drawback was the first week there wasn’t much ventilation in the room until we figured out the middle skylight opened. (So to future guests; there is a pole on the side of the sofa that you use to open that skylight) The bunk room is perfect for kids. My oldest enjoyed staying in that room. If for some reason we ever end up back in Independence we would definitely love to stay at her house again!

I only stayed one night and got there late and left early so really only used it as a place to sleep. I was visiting my daughter at OSU in Corvallis and Independence was the closest accommodations I could get as it was Family Weekend at OSU and the town was booked. That being said, Independence was beautiful. The house was beautiful and had lots of gorgeous woodwork and character. The bedroom was very nice but unfortunately had no windows, only skylights and those were covered in an attempt to keep the room from overheating with the sun coming through the skylights. The bed was in a very narrow space in the room so that I had to crawl from foot of bed up to head of bed to get under the covers to sleep and there was no room on either side of bed for a night stand so no bedside light, clock or table to put a glass of water on. Other than that it was a very nice comfortable room.

I had an extended stay at Janine's lovely home while moving to Oregon. Her house is conveniently located. The post office, library, restaurants, Independence Saturday Market are all walkable, and the commute to Salem is a breeze. Janine is friendly and super creative and offered great advice on places to go and things to do.

Janine's place is really a gem. Independence in a great small town in Oregon that's still close enough to cities like Eugene, Newport on the coast, and Salem. But really, none of that matters because it's her house that's beautiful and comfortable and worth the stay. My two days here were lovely. You will be staying down the street from this quaint little restaurant with great breakfast and lunch called the Pink House. And Janine's got a beautiful kitchen and porch to eat and relax if you don't want to go out. I'm so happy I stayed here and plan to come back!
