The space
Penthouse set against the magnificent tropical Atlantic Ocean! Luxurious views.

Covid19 update: pools are closed, beach access is limited to exercise and there’s a 9pm curfew.

Power/WIFI: Intermittent closures island-wide, regionally and locally at times. Please do not rely on Wifi/internet for business/work as it may not be available at the times you need. I am self-employed and use my cell service to hotspot, but if there are major power outages, cell service can drop too. If you need guaranteed 100% internet/power, strongly consider a hotel as most Airbnbs around the island will suffer the same outage.

1. SAFETY. Many properties you will see on Airbnb in Puerto Rico are not in gated, secured communities. This can subject your vehicle to 'smash and grab' theft, and your condominium to robbery or worse. My complex has a 24 hour gate with security guards patrolling the premises to ensure you are safe and secure at all hours of your stay.

2. THE BEACH: Many of the few secure access locations such as in Dorado have beaches behind a break wall. This outcome means the water is calm, but it's turbid and not clear (think about an ocean harbor, which is calm, but dirty). There's no opportunity to see much sea life or hear the crashing of the waves. Our property is against a reef. The wave action is high and there's an abundance of natural sea life including birds, crustaceans and baby fish. There is an entry to see the reef up close
and underwater on our beach.

3. PEACE AND QUITE: There are plenty of hotels and vacation rentals in San Juan, but tourists are everywhere, and it's loud. If you like the party and shopping scene, go on a cruise. If you like to just hear the ocean and the quite sound of families, this is your place.

4. REAL PUERTO RICO: Our area is a safe, off the beaten-path, rural beach town. You'll see people riding horses in the streets, fruit vendors on the roads, and miles of tropical forest and lagoons.

5. RUNNING: I'm a distance runner, from the 5k to the 50 miler. I chose my house because I can run to the beach and back, or trail run about 10 minutes from the house. There's a track nearby for 400 meter repeats. And if you want to just run around the complex, there's a 800 meter path and you can make it one mile with sidewalks on the south side of the interior of the complex.

Bottom line: I had the opportunity to buy anywhere, but I chose this specific location. While there's plenty of places to go, my place is the best.

- This property has one QUEEN size bed, one FULL (smaller than the queen), two TWIN beds (perfect for children) and one futon (also for a child). The best max number of guests who would fit comfortably would probably be 2 couples, and 2 children.

- Oceanside family-friendly condo unit on 3rd floor with open roof where you can see the mountains to the north and ocean to the south. Located on north central coast - a quiet condominium complex away from the noise and partying of San Juan. Perfect for families or those looking for a quiet getaway.

- 2 balconies which face the ocean trees and plants. You can hear the waves all day and night.

- 1 mile from Los Tubos (surfing/snorkeling), 1 mile from Vega Baja beach, 5 miles from Laguna Tortuguero.

- 35-40 minutes west of San Juan on north central coast.

- Smoke-free unit - Smoking is not permitted on the premises, balcony or nearby. Non-smokers only please.

- Sleeps four adults and two children comfortably.

- Footsteps to the pools, tennis courts and beach with secure gate access and natural tide pools.

- Two tennis courts, two basketball courts and a beach volleyball court, all with night-time illumination.

-Totally equipped gym, free weights, television, music system and an outdoor area for aerobics.

- Various Children's playgrounds throughout the complex.

*Beautifully landscaped, tree-lined and well lit green areas with passive walking areas bordering the beachfront, ideally suited for walks, jogs, runs or for enjoying nature.

* 5 minutes from surfing location, 5 minutes from open ocean swimming area and protected cove

- Master bedroom faces beach sounds and ocean trees.

- River Kayak (for Tortuga nature preserve)

- Two private parking spots.

- Furnished living room (including TV with Cable, DVD and CD player/FM/AM Stereo)

- A/C in all rooms - please conserve and use at night only. :)

- Equipped kitchen with utility (refrigerator/freezer,Stove Top,
microwave, coffee maker)

- Washer and Dryer

- Dining area

- Master Bedroom with full bathroom,queen-size bed, alarm-
clock radio, A/C and closet space

- 2 Additional bedrooms, one with with queen and one with a trundle bed.

- Fully stocked linen closet: bath towels and bed sheets sets

- Hair dryer

- Complementary initial toiletry supplies (body soap, shampoo and toilet paper)

*Gated community with controlled access

*24-hr security guard / patrol service

*Coral and tide pool beach access.

*SORRY, NO PETS ALLOWED - NO SMOKING ALLOWED

* There is a portable fold-up kayak on the premises that can be used to go to Tortuga nature preserve 10 minutes away - a beautiful fresh-water lake and river with hundreds of rare plant and animal species.

- 30 minutes from Arecibo. 40 minutes from the Caves of Camuy.

- Because of our proximity to the ocean with the salty and humid air (and trade winds), appliances can break sometimes. We will do our best to fix things when they do break down but it may take more time because of the limited availability of repair persons.

- Our air conditioning units make a bit of soft noise, they are wall units and the salty air does get to them at times!

Guest access
Guests will have access to two pools (*currently closed due to Covid19), a reef-covered tide pool beach, tennis and basketball court, paved running path, sea kayak, TV, laundry, stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, roof and balconies. [NOTE: there may be restrictions for beach/gym based on Covid19 prevailance.]

Other things to note
The location is a triathlete and runner's dream with open ocean swimming, running and biking routes up and down the ocean just outside of the condo complex. Perfect for snorkeling and surfing, especially when the swells head from the north during the winter.

NOTE: The Puerto Rican electrical and internet grid is aging and subject to malfunctions due to salty ocean air. There are no generators on site, and while regional island power outages are infrequent, rolling blackouts can occur. If you fear power outages in general, you may wish to stay in a hotel (although those are generally more expensive). The same holds true for water service.

WARNING: This is the tropics, to the existence of 'critters' is not unheard of - occasional tiny, speedy (but not dangerous) ghost ants may find their way into the condo. Personally I enjoy watching them create little trails but if you're not into it, we have pesticide spray in the closet or you can just use a paper towel. You may see a cool looking beetle, dragonfly or even a mosquito. We do have screens but they can occasionally fly in.

Vega Baja, Puerto Rico

If you're looking for a safe, secure, condominium complex with gated access against a natural reef, a couple of miles from a natural reserve, snorkeling, kayaking and running in the middle of a beach town immersed in local culture, this condo is for you. If you're looking for the typical cruise ship tourist cliche of being walking distance to shopping, restaurants, and another old fort, this is not for you.

My complex lies against a natural reef-covered beach where you can see ocean snails, tropical fish, crabs and sea urchins, especially during low tide. About one mile to the west is Playa Los Tubos, a prime surfing spot, and about 20 meters to the west of that is an area prime for snorkeling and diving where you can see sea turtles, sting rays, barracuda and tropical fish. One mile to the east is a giant tide pool protected beach called Puerto Nuevo which is sheltered by giant limestone cliffs. The complex itself is beautiful and quiet, except for the sound of ocean waves. The condo is located in a small beach town with a promenade, a few restaurants and locals selling coconuts and frozen ice drinks. You MUST rent a car, but once in certain areas you can certainly walk around.

Hi! I'm Jesse! My wife's family lives in Puerto Rico so this is our temporary winter home. I'm married with 3 young daughters and live in Michigan. I'm into snorkeling, skiing, ultra running, travel and movies. I enjoy reading, mostly about history and international relations. I'm a Michigan State University grad and lifelong Spartan fan! Go Green! :) When it comes to hosting, I'll be responsive to any inquiries and questions about the location, typically within a few hours. Because I love the Island so much, I'm going to tell you where to go and what to do, and what I love about it so you can have an experience which is more special than the typical 'cruise ship' visit to Old San Juan. Our location is special because it is against a natural reef beach, white sand beach and nature reserve. This is the kind of thing I look for when I travel - going off the beaten path to unexplored locations.
