Wake up to the sunrise and shower with the birds. The single room apartment has one of the best views in the region. An blue ocean and lush green valley panorama with Byron Bay's iconic lighthouse in the distance.

The space

We have a beautiful home near the Crystal Castle five minutes drive from Mullumbimby with breathtaking views of the ocean and Byron Bay in the distance!

Situated on 22 acres of beautiful Byron Hinterland farm land and bordering a nature reserve, we have a great, private single room self contained apartment on the ground floor of our house for one or two guests.

The apartment has a basic kitchenette, laundry, TV, queen size bed, fold out sofa lounge, wifi internet. Entrance is separate to the rest of the house which adds to the privacy. We often don't see guests after check in unless interested in a farm tour.

The solar heated, rainwater, naturist shower and bath are outside in the garden so it may not suit everyone but anyone who likes to feel at one with nature will love it. It's our most popular feature and many nature lovers return just for the shower! It's like showering under a warm waterfall with fresh air and greenery all around. There is NO inside shower or bath so consider if that aspect will suit before booking.

The property is a working banana farm. Although we are not certified organic we manage the farm using natural systems and we don't use chemicals. We harvest year round and love showing off the property and farming operation and sharing ideas about landscape management and sustainability, We always have lots of bananas for guests.

Over half the property is natural bushland with lots of wildlife including koalas, wallabies, echidnas, rare birds and frogs.

The property has some beautiful bushwalks including one to the top of our hill where you will see some of the best views in the region.

We are about a 20 min drive from Byron Bay and 15 minutes from the beaches of Brunswick Heads.

Rates start at $60 per night and vary according to seasonal demand. Longer term stays are welcome and very negotiable so if you're interested in accommodation for a week or a month or more don't hesitate to contact us and ask questions or make an offer.

Guest access

The apartment is a granny flat on the ground floor of our house. It's self contained and private with it's own entrance and parking directly outside. None of the space is shared with others.

Other things to note

Our property borders a nature reserve so there is no shortage of bugs and insects around. Sometimes spiders will find their way into the room but they are all harmless. Contact us if you discover any unwelcome guests and we will evict them.

Garry and Suzy are very friendly and warm hosts and they have a beautiful son, Billy. Their home has a superbly amazing view to die for, a haven for those who appreciate the nature and the stars. Garry is very prompt in responding, making it easy to coordinate the time to check in, and was nice to offer an early check in. We were lucky to have been upgraded to the room upstairs as the guests from the previous booking wanted to extend their stay. The outdoor baths are fascinating, but unfortunately the weather was too cold for us to try it. There was a lot of space for us and there was an abundance of delicious self-produced bananas for us to help ourselves with. Garry even made us his well-known yummy banana smoothie! Driving to Byron Bay is convenient so it was a great decision to have chosen Garry's home.

We had an awesome stay at Garry's place for my girlfriend's birthday over the weekend. The location of the property is just perfect for anyone who wants a quiet getaway but still be close enough to Byron Bay. The view from the room was the best this area has to offer. The room was very clean and had everything you need if you wish to cook your own food and even a blender with bananas straight off the farm ready for smoothies. The outdoor bathroom was a highlight for us, being able to enjoy the views while taking a morning shower was amazing. Garry was always available to contact if we needed anything or any suggestions on places to visit or find good vegan food and he was more than happy to take us on a tour of the farm due to our interest in permaculture and organic farming. We highly recommend this stay and we will definitely be back again!

The view was spectacular, the room large and very clean with a comfortable bed. Garry was a great host. Just sorry we could not have stayed longer and the weather was very, very wet. We still had a great time.

We had the best weekend ever at Garry and Suzy’s place. The view is beautiful and the outdoor shower is such a great experience. Garry helped us out so much with local tips such as shopping and transport options. The bananas were delicious and the location is great for anyone wanting to visit Crystal Castle as it’s only a 20 min walk away.

About Garry

I'm a hippie banana farmer from Mullumbimby near Byron Bay. My parents bought our piece of paradise over thirty years ago when the farming communities were in decline and land was cheap. We immediately went about restoring the degraded, weed infested natural bushland which includes koala habitat and threatened ecosystems. Since 1980 we have planted over eight thousand trees grown from seed collected from local remnants and removed acres of weeds. I love rainforests can identify most species in the local area and can recognise local birds from their calls.

We took over management of the degraded four hectare banana plantation and converted it to a more organic or biological system. Previously chemicals were used and soil erosion was slowly destroying the landscape. We created swales (terraces) to catch and slow water movement and planted cover crops to hold the precious topsoil in place. Our main source of fertiliser is farm grown chipped wood and compost used as a mulch. We are essentially taking carbon from the atmosphere where it is a problem and storing it in the soil where it is useful but lacking. Carbon feeds the microbial life that is essential to plant health and our farm philosophy revolves around that fact. Harmlessness is something we apply to every aspect of our project. We aim to not harm the land and respect all the life that inhabits it including microscopic life under the soil surface.

I'm married to Suzy who works as a flight attendant. We are vegan and hope guests respect and accept our philosophy. We welcome anyone into our home who is interested in nature, sustainability, peace and compassion, alternative thinking and lifestyles.. or anyone who is respectful of our beautiful property.

We love sharing our house and amazing property with appreciative people so send us a message if you want to discover paradise or just want to say hello. If you don't have the opportunity to stay but are in the area and are curious about what a sustainable banana farm looks like I usually can spare half an hour to show it off. There's a free banana smoothie in it for anyone who is interested enough.
