Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom

Sowerby Bridge is a small Pennine Town with an industrial past. Situated in Calderdale, on the river Calder, Sowerby Bridge is quieter and less touristy than nearby Hebden Bridge but also has an interesting canal basin and lovely nearby countryside. The town is within easy access of all that Calderdale has to offer.

The town boasts several good cafes, pubs and restaurants and is well connected by rail and bus. The nearby countryside offers plentiful walks and there are many excellent country pubs.

The house is in an elevated position above the town in a safe neighbourhood and is close to bus stops for nearby Halifax, Hebden Bridge and Ripponden. Bronte country is within reach by car or public transport and it is also possible to reach Leeds and Manchester by train

There is an annual rushbearing festival in the town which is well worth experiencing

Some popular places to eat and drink in the area include
The newly opened and highly recommended Moorcock Inn, Norland, see the review by Jay Rayner in the Guardian
Up the road in Warley village is the fantastic Maypole inn, great views from the garden, large portions and great value, this is walkable for the fit on a nice evening ( uphill to get there - 30 min walk).
Also in Warley is the Winterburn Pub which has amazing views over the area
Gimbals restaurant down the road in Sowerby Bridge, fine dining in a lovely setting.
The Village Indian restaurant is probably the nearest eatery , excellent Indian food and they also do takeaways.
Another recommended Indian restaurant is Syhiba, also on Wharf st.
The Hobbit in Norland - has a Sunday Carvery and views over Sowerby Bridge.
Best value and biggest menu choices locally is the Sportsmans inn, Barkisland - also does an excellent Sunday Carvery
The Moorings pub in Sowerby Bridge is in an old water mill by the canal which serves food.
There's a lovely cafe down the road from us on Wharf St called Moonbean, selling breakfast, lunch, sandwiches, cakes, nachos and with gluten free, veggie and vegan options ( though not a veggie only place). The cafe is licensed and has a large selection of gins amongst other alcoholic drinks. They also do smoothies.
The Larder delicatessen on Wharf street also has a cafe attached.
Gabriel's cafe, near to the bottom of Gratrix lane ( so probably our nearest) serves coffee and cakes and sandwiches with indoor and outdoor seating.
The nearest pub/bar to the house is the Peacock at the top of Bairstow Lane on Burnley Rd.
Other good pubs in the town of Sowerby Bridge are - The Hogshead ( real ale brewed on the premises) ; Hollins Mill ( large selection of real ales) ; The Firehouse ( also serves food), The Blind Pig for live music and late opening.
The town is also fortunate to have a good Wetherspoons Pub, The Commercial- serving food and drink all day ( including breakfast) .

There's a Lidl and a Tesco in Sowerby Bridge- there's other large stores and supermarkets including Sainsburys in Halifax.

Halifax is within very easy reach by car or public transport and the newly renovated Piece Hall and nearby Square Chapel are particularly worth visiting.
