Sparkling clean
4 recent guests said this place was sparkling clean.
This is for the traveler who would like the experience of being in a beautifully decorated, 1 of a kind home, that is original. Our home dates from 1895, is well appointed with period antiques. We are not the equivalent of a standard motel or a bnb. We have WIFI but no cable tv. This home does not have central air; however our guests have found it comfortable. This house has many staircases and multiple levels.

The space
Private home in East Hancock Historic Neighborhood, across from Houghton Michigan with beautiful views of the portage. Two blocks from downtown Hancock, within walking distance to portage, town of Hancock and town of Houghton and 5 minutes to Michigan Technological University (MTU). Quiet private neighborhood. Tennis courts nearby (weather permitting). This is a share home, there are multiple bedrooms and as with homes of this era; 1 large bathroom. This room has a firm bed, down comforter, walk in closet, dresser and radiator heat. This room is on the 2nd floor of a 3 story house.

Guest access
During the wintertime we allow guests to park (first come first serve) in the lower garage. We give you a code to open the garage doors. Parking in the garage is at your own risk. This is a nice convenience in the winter time. It allows access through the garage into the basement into the upper level. A basement is a basement (remember this house is over 123 years old. ) Considering that, our basement isn't too bad. All guests have access to living room, dining room, kitchen, front porch and yard. This is a 3700 square foot house with multiple stories accessible by stairs. There are multiple bedrooms (separate listings). Listings include Historic Hancock, East Hancock and Upper Peninsula. Reservations over 1 night require housekeeping fees. Washer and Dryer access is included; you may use them for free. Note: We have WIFI. There is NO cable TV. There is a glassed in front porch that you may enjoy sitting. Please remove shoes and leave them outside the kitchen or in the vestibule between the foyer and the front porch. You have limited kitchen access; you can use the refrigerator and microwave. We do have coffee makers (nespresso and mr. coffee) available. We stock coffee above the microwave but don't want to absolutely guarantee it's full (or it may run out while guests are there). Please do not eat in your room; there are plenty of private areas to have a quiet snack. Please no sleeping on the couch or sneaking extra guests. No alcohol can be consumed on the premises; nor rebel rousing is allowed. We reserve the right to ask you to leave if this happens. Please remove your things from the bathroom since it is shared. Some guests really love to luxuriate in the 6 foot claw foot tub but be mindful of how long you are in there if you are not the only guest.

Other things to note
All original stained glass, fireplace, foyer tiles, wood work and doors. Hardwood floors throughout; some find a bit slippery. Granite kitchen countertops, sub-zero drawer refrigerators, microwave, and cook top. Small island. High ceilings, original fixtures and long victorian windows. This home is a unique experience and designed for quiet enjoyment. If you are the type of traveler that likes to hole up in a hotel room for your stay this home is not for you. We want guests to experience the great outdoors and all the unique things that the Houghton/Hancock area has to offer whether winter, summer, spring or fall. This is not the big city; so big city amenities are not prevalent; it is a very small town and remote area but quite unique.

Hancock, Michigan, United States

House was built originally in 1895. It was considered a working farm at the time. Hancock was a mining town, 1 block down the street is one of the entrances to the Quincy Mine. Quincy Mine has one of the world's longest shafts. Copper was mined in the Keweenaw as well as iron ore. East Hancock is on the historic registry and a handful of the original homes still stand.
