Right in the middle of Monteverde, on the famous Curi-Cancha Reserve. Huge windows, soaring beams, and wraparound porch for enjoying the forest with your morning coffee. Built by one of the original Quaker families.

The space
This is beautiful house was built with love in the early 50's by Hubert and Mildred Mendenhall, two of the original Quaker settlers. Several of their children were born here. My family, the Lowthers, purchased the house and property in 1970. The property is now the Curi-Cancha Reserve and I am very proud that we are able to protect this gorgeous cloud forest and support a large number of local families in an environmentally friendly way. The spacious living room with soaring cedro beams and huge windows looks out on the forest and the large deck. Note the original party line telephone on the wall as you enter. That party line phone no longer operates (although there is a nice modern phone and wifi) as there is no party line to be part of, but we love the way it looks. Linens are provided. I've left a guitar that you are welcome to use and also a number of games: Wingspan, Monopoly, Clue, Catan, Dominant Species, Code Names, Chess, and several decks of cards. The house has WiFi, full kitchen with extras such as dishwasher, blender, oven, microwave, coffee maker, rice maker, and crock pot. The house also has a washing machine, clothes dryer, and indoor garage. There is a bidet in the bathroom. I am working on getting the jacuzzi pump repaired but for now it is just a tub and hot shower. In the summer of 2018 we installed all solar electricity and water heating to reduce our carbon footprint. 70+ years: that's old for a wooden house in a tropical cloud forest. Constant love and care keep it going. Please let us know if anything needs attention.

We are in the heart of the original Quaker settlement of Monteverde. Located ON the Curi-Cancha Reserve about halfway between Santa Elena (3 km) where most shops are, and the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve (3 km). We are easy walking distance from several stores and restaurants that are in the center of Monteverde.

I grew up in Monteverde, but for the last 30 years I have been a middle school math teacher in Baltimore, MD. I love board and card games, hiking in the rain forest, canoeing, camping, playing music with friends, and travel. I am very proud of Curi-Cancha and that we are protecting our 200 acres of cloud forest. It was half virgin cloud forest when we bought it. My family has never cleared any areas and we have regrown most of the pasture.
